The now former champion Roman Reigns has been the top guy for almost 4 years. I think he won that title in August or September 2020. In the time since he’s worked a very light schedule with very predictable match outcomes, which led to some fan ire.

the person who beat him last night, Cody Rhodes, left WWE in 2016 when he was a not-important guy, built himself back up in other companies and even helped start WWE’s biggest competition, AEW, before returning to WWE in 2022 as a much bigger star.

Cody and Roman faced each other last year in the main event of Wrestlemania, but disappointingly, Roman won and continued his reign. Cody won the Royal Rumble this year in January, giving him a main event match at Wrestlemania again, but The Rock came back (now as a real life member of the corporate structure of WWE) and basically tried to take Cody’s spot in this year’s main event.

fans were not happy at all and WWE changed their plans, putting Cody & Roman back as the main event, where Cody prevailed

what did the undertaker have to do with this

 

Basically the story of the match was that all of the people Roman beat on his way to the top came back to sort of help Cody win. Roman beat Undertaker at Wrestlemania 2017, where Undertaker had initially retired before eventually coming back for some big pay day matches in Saudi Arabia. Undertaker has also had plenty of matches with The Rock back in the late 90s/early 2000s so they have history

 

It was also the launching point of a new era of WWE, one without Vince at the wheel or ever having a chance of coming back. So the whole show was kinda fueled with that momentum.

 

Right, and as I think I said last night, WWE is the hottest they’ve been in 20 years. Didn’t want to overwhelm murph any more than I already was lol
