No surprise, but the LiveNation Presale for Twenty One Pilots are so much more expensive than the artist presale on Tuesday. On Tuesday, I bought lower level tickets for the Cleveland show for $160 - and the entire lower level was $160. My same section for LN presale today is $235 and other lower level tickets are up to $400.

By the looks of things, there are still a TON of tickets available - especially in the upper levels.

I did not know this was their song but I had at least heard the band name. That song is annoying to me

Lol same. I was wondering how this band was able to pull amphitheaters and arenas… Now I know why

Non punk-based Alt rock confuses the hell out of me. It feels like every band had at least one hit, all those hits get played pretty evenly across the same things (radio stations, coffee shops, Judd Apatow movies, etc). They all do roughly 3 or 4 different versions of the same thing, and somehow people randomly chose which ones stand out. Like what do you mean Vampire Weekend is unquestionably a festival headliner but Franz Ferdinand is a nothingburger? How does the 1975 have millions more fans than the Neighborhood when they’re practically the same, just less problematic? Glass Animals feels like one of those bands that has a million fans who are online NPCs you’ll never meet in the wild

I know you’re right about streams and popularity, I was moreso talking about both bands being problematic

Glass animals are awesome and have been around a lot longer and made music way before they won a grammy for best new artist (which I still don't understand how 3 or 4 albums in you're even eligible for that but that's besides the point).

Though ever since someone said the singer sounded like Herbert The Pervert (family guy) on Gooey, I can't unhear it.

There's a few things happening here. And TBH, it's all pretty similar to what happens in punk, hardcore, ska, emo, or whatever... There's the usual suspects that can differentiate similar sounding artists. Their aesthetics. The way they handle their online presence. Live shows and tours they get on. Big dumb luck. The way the bands have managed their careers after they get that one big hit or have that one big album.

All of the above are why the 1975 stood out. It's almost because of the problematic behavior. Because it gives people a narrative to observe and follow along with.

Think about some of the bigger bands in punk, hardcore, emo, or whatever. A lot of them have a person in the band people can cite and/or observe in interviews or on social media. An avatar for the whole thing.

But beyond that, I think a lot of it has to do with where your own focus is. To flip what you're saying, I bet a person whose into Glass Beaches would probably tell you that Hardcore Band A sounds exactly like Hardcore Band B when you might think they're pretty distinct.

There's obvious stand-outs and those are the ones that usually really "pop" but they're also the ones that are usually something decidedly different than their peers (and, frankly, leaning in a "poppier" or "safer" direction).

Truly truly truly not calling you out, but the fact you couldn't even get the name right is hilarious and proves the point lol

I like a lot of that music so the quality difference between the 1975 and the neighborhood is massive to me lol. But I only listen to a handful of “chorus” type bands so I can’t tell the difference between like… taking back sunday and new found glory. All depends on how much you know from that genre I guess haha

The 1975 is more of a full circle presentation band. They get really into not just the music but the hype, the videos, etc. The Neighbourhood, on the other hand, just doesn't seem to have the same amount of personality.

This conversation reminds me of what I'd hear in the 00's as it pertained to the emo scene at the time. People who weren't invested couldn't tell why kids would claim that New Found Glory/Yellowcard were "Authentic" whereas Simple Plan/Good Charlotte were "Corporate Sell-outs". It all sounded the same to them.

Glass Animals was already like subbing big stages at festivals before Heat Waves came out. They're pretty akin to like Portugal. The Man in the sense that they already had a pretty large fanbase before that big hit. The hit just propelled them to the top of the bill instead of like.. the second line. What happened before and what happened after that big hit have a lot to do with things.
