Blake at least looked like an okay mobile quarterback and a competent deep ball passer every now and then.

Blaine Gabbert came into the league good at absolutely nothing and he remains good at absolutely nothing.

I genuinely think Blake Bortles had "starting QB traits" but was too lazy and had too much of a drinking problem to develop them and be consistently clean / fundamentally sound. He was definitely the guy out pounding 14 bud lights and trying to bang some blonde at the bar the night before the game, instead of watching film. There was some Ryan Leaf in his personality lol

Blaine Gabbert, was just too scared to play football. He played scared and never got good because he was scared. While that may be more logical / intelligent for the average human being, it's more of a cardinal sin for a football player haha

Mac Jones without the pressure to be The Guy is a real solid backup option

The 2021 and 2022 QB classes being a bunch of stinkers with starting experience was a godsend to the backup QB market

the Blaine Gabbert experience really solidified to me how brave you have to be to play quarterback in the NFL. He had absolutely zero pocket presence and was not willing to side step and confidently release the ball when he's about to take a hit. That doomed him completely.

He could not throw deep, he could not dodge a DL and check it down under pressure, he was not slow (ran a 4.66 forty - faster than Andrew Luck) but could not even run the ball cause he was scared to do that too!! He would recoil and panic and do dumb shit or take ugly sacks. He had an awesome defense in his rookie year, and a good offensive line, MJD LED THE LEAGUE in rushing, our only concern was we had no good receivers to bail him out. In that situation a Cam Newton would will himself to victory, while Blaine Gabbert from the same draft class would take his awesome offensive line and rushing attack for granted because he sees ghosts and is scared to get hit even in a clean pocket.

Without anybody he trusts to throw the ball to early, we would lose games 13-20 cause he didn't have the courage to make a single tough third down play. Then in year 2 MJD held out and got hurt and then was washed, and while Justin Blackmon was extremely good right away he also had drug suspensions right away. Sometimes I wonder, maybe if we had healthy MJD and fully instated Justin Blackmon, if Gabbert might have shown enough improvement year 2 not to move on, but instead we would go 2-14 that year and make more-picks-than-TDs Chad Henne the starter simply because he had the balls to throw the ball under pressure lol.

Then Shack Harris's many bad draft picks and FA signings caught up to us and our defense and line were no longer good. Gabbert started 2013 1-7 TD:INT ratio and got re-benched. We traded MJD cause he clearly wasn't the same, Justin Blackmon was out of the league for good by mid-year two, and then we traded left tackle Eugene Monroe. Then we replaced Monroe with HORRIBLE BUST Luke Joeckel, we replaced Gabbert/Henne by over-drafting bust Blake Bortles when we coulda had slightly better Derek Carr or Jimmy G in round 2, and our big plan to replace MJD was signin pudgy slow RB Toby Gerhart and drafting 190 pound college QB Denard Robinson to change positions and play runningback. When I look at the Jags moves from 2008-2015 it is incredibly obvious why we were one of the worst teams in the NFL for 10 years.

But Gabbert is infamous to me for being the first really bad miss that started the momentum of our 10 years of misfortune, and it all being because he was a scaredy-cat about throwing the ball. He was first in yards lost by sacks in 2011 (293!!) and among active players, he is still 26th in the league in yards lost from sacks (942) and 11th in pick sixes (7) despite not being a starter in over a decade. His career yards per atttempt is a paltry 5.27, a "good quarterback" should be clearing 7. Those numbers should illustrate to you the kind of pathetic boring wimpy football Blaine Gabbert plays lmao.
