    why not?

are you simply "show me the sacks or I don't care!" because thats a bad way to evaluate a player IMO

They’re fine when look at them relative to the rest of a pass rusher’s stats, but if the crux of an argument for a player is “Look at their total pressures or their pressure rate,” it just doesn’t move the needle for me. I just don’t care much for pressures or hurries when a lot of QBs in today’s NFL can just move off their spot and still pick up the first down with their legs or arm.

I mean, Brandon Graham has been the king of pressures throughout a large portion of his career and the argument was always “One of these years he’s gonna have a lot of sacks” and it happened one time. I think Graham was always a good player for a while and is still solid, but I just don’t think the whole “Pressures are a good measure for future sacks” is all that indicative.

Josh Sweat’s pressure rate was up there with Haason Reddick’s last season, but Reddick got more sacks because he faced off against worse players than Sweat did and sometimes Reddick was simply unblocked

Pressures are fine. They’re just one of the last things I look at for a pass rusher. I actually care about getting sacks. I’m not interested in handing out participation trophies to all the edge rushers that pressured Patrick Mahomes in the super bowl just to not account for much in a loss

I think my point is that pressures are much more of a tell to see how consistent a player is or can be. A player can luck into a bunch of sacks in a season. Back in the day, Adewale Ogunleye for Miami stands out to me, playing across from Jason Taylor had I think 16 sacks one year when in reality he was kind of mid.

For sure and I definitely recognize that with sacks. I think the truth is in the middle. It’s definitely something I’ve been thinking about a lot this offseason, especially with all the news surrounding Reddick and Sweat.

A lot of people think Reddick is an elite edge rusher simply by looking at his sack totals. While I do think he’s great and the Eagles are more likely to be worse without him, I don’t think his sacks tell the whole story.

I don’t subscribe to Brandon Thorn’s work, but I know he does a ton of film study on OL/DL and does a lot of work with prospects and pros. I was reading an article earlier this offseason that referenced his work that pointed out the narratives surrounding both Reddick and Sweat, and how many of Reddick’s sacks are not of rare/elite quality.

He is not at the level of Parsons, Watt, Garrett, Bosa, and Crosby, but he wants to be paid like that. He’s absolutely in his right to feel that way because, at the end of the day, I believe that sacks get payers paid, not pressures. With that being said, I think Reddick is closer to Hendrickson than those others guys, which is part of the reason why I was always more in favor of the Eagles keeping Sweat over Reddick. He’s younger and the pressure metrics indicate that Sweat is just as efficient as Reddick is.

With that being said, I would like to see Sweat get home more because, again, pressures only mean so much. It’s just one example, but it’s no coincidence that Reddick sacked Dak Prescott in their week 9 matchup when facing off against RT Terrance Steele, while Sweat got stonewalled against LT Tyron Smith. Then, with the game on the line on the final drive, Sean Desai finally lined up Sweat against Steele and Sweat got a crucial sack against Dak that essentially sealed the game.

At the end of the day, great players beat great players and get sacks. Pressures are fine if you want to measure a player’s individual efficiency, but that can only mean so much. The idea that they will all of a sudden turn into future sacks is what I don’t buy into.
