I would actually argue that crazy range is frequently a limitation on good vocals. I can think of a lot of singers who have so much ability that they never really developed the peripheral vocal talents that matter most.

The one that always jumps to me is James Labrie from Dream Theater. Nobody can match that dude for insane technical skill. But he's congenitally incapable of surprising you or making you feel something.

Yup definitely agree I can't get into them at all and I mean that applies to all of the members of that band, they're all technically proficient at what they do but fuck I don't feel a drip of emotion from any of their music

Evidence is the best song on Invented how does anyone think otherwise?

Heart is hard to find and the title track are in a completely different league than not only evidence but also the better part of their whole discography

Which, I get that emotional connection isn't the goal of their two main genres (metal and prog), but, like, Metallica makes me feel things in their music and so do Yes (awe, wonder, adventure, as opposed to heartache or empathy), so it's do-able.

Um "Mixtape" wins Invented for me, but "Cut" is right there, too.

If Big Casino didn't exist before it, I might like it more. I still like it, but it's just too similar to BC.

Eh I feel plenty of emotion from all the metal I'm interested in. Prog not so much, which is probably why I've soured on opeths recent output

I would have never thought these songs sounded alike but I totally see it now that you mentioned it haha.

Well I meant their particular strain of metal. Not trying to make that broad a statement. Haha

Ahhh gotcha gotcha yeah I see what you mean. But yeah technical proficiency is cool for a listen or two... but if I'm not feeling something I won't be coming back much. The novelty of a super fast guitar solo or a wild range on a singer or fast drum fills just wears off

"I watched you put on a dress I'd never seen/Something that begged for east Atlantic breeze." -Evidence

One of my all-time favorite JEW lines, and the kind of imagery I love this band for.

Yep. You can build a big fancy Victorian house on a shitty foundation...but that shit isn't gonna hold up long.

    all we have is time

The end of "coffee and cigarettes" is soooo strong though. Love all the vocal dubs and the way he annunciates the very last "cigarettes."

Me too. The only thing that kind of bothers me about the album version is that there's very little dynamics. I feel like the verse is too heavy hitting at times.. guitars are way upfront the same way they are in the chorus. But I see what they were going for and it does work I guess haha

  21. coffee and cigarettes makes me think of my mom because we'd spend hours outside drinking coffee and she'd smoke cigarettes. i played it a lot when i first moved out.

it also reminds me of a lot of my friends--just sitting and talking and the little moments that you mutually abandon so you can spread out across states and countries and live your lives. things you miss but you won't go back to, you just carry the memories. of all the things I think I'll miss...

  22. Question:

Does anyone know if there exists, online somewhere, a high-quality version of the original Clarity cover with the collage of smaller images? Not the one used since the album was reissued in 2009 with the 4 larger images (at least once of which being single artwork IIRC) - the one from 1999. Something I would very much like to be able to use as a wallpaper!

Or if anyone has one of the original pressings on vinyl, maybe you could scan that... :)

Hey now. Look at you. Way cool.

The 4 larger images was the original cover. The 2009 reissue is no different really.

"Evidence" and "Cut" are both top tier JEW songs as far as I'm concerned, and "Coffee and Cigarettes" might be my favorite song on the album. Of course, I don't really think they do middle of the road or mid level at all. To me their songs are either transcendent and amazing or pretty bad. 10 out of the 12 songs on Invented are crucial JEW tracks and the other 2 I have no desire to ever hear again.
