Riley was also such a personality/face for the band.
Not to discount Paul but he was 1 of 9.

I'm still excited to see Power Trip back but I don't think they'll ever be able to capture the same energy

 

Am I misremembering something, or is it more around how the band reacted to his death and the time immediately following it? Seems like it was a lot of talk of not playing again, leaving it alone, it being Riley's legacy, etc. Otherwise the backlash for them playing again wouldn't be there.

EDIT: that came out a little calloused, bands walk back stuff like that all the time, not even factoring in the emotional toll of a bandmate's death, but I can't imagine why there would be any potential backlash to them performing again if that wasn't the case.

 

Pretty much this IMO. I get that the band has every right to continue on as there's four other people involved, but it's like GWAR trying to replace Dave Brockie/Oderus. There's just something about his cult of personality that's hard to replace as one of the best frontpeople of his era. Maybe if they put out new music that's quality, I might develop a different opinion. But until then, it feels like it's a tribute run.

Edit: Blake's stance on Israel/Gaza also kinda soured my vibes on Fugitive/Power Trip but that's a personal thing.

 

I don’t think they ever said it was the end of the band, they had new music in the works for years, and had always alluded to maybe returning. But I agree that given how much of a presence Riley was, it should be under a new name. Feels like a different metal band at this point.

 

Did you read his response? Seems like he learned a lot.

 

Was nonplussed by it tbh. It read to me like someone who was trying to play damage control because they got called out. It also would've been nice if he acknowledged Gaza as a genocide, but again, it's a personal preference. Doesn't mean I'm not gonna listen to Power Trip or Fugitive as a result.
