The discourse around Civil War has been so loud that almost nobody talked about that weird Showalter movie based on a Harry Styles fan fic novel that debuted at SXSW where Anne Hathaway plays a 40 year old single mom who starts dating her daughter's favorite 20 something year old pop idol

This was a good piece. It identified multiple reasons why more people use subtitles now, but the main reasons being that the internal speakers on flat screens just aren't very good, and that studios just don't have the budget to do proper sound mixing anymore so there is a lot of corner cutting going on in sound editing rooms now.

This movie rules and is way underrated. Curtis Hanson directed white water rafting yuppie nightmare with a stacked cast of Streep, Bacon, Strathairn, John C Reilly, and the kid from Jurassic Park. They just don't make them like this anymore.

Even younger writers who grew up with cell phones grew up watching movies without them. It is still a tricky thing to work around because of how much it alters so many types of plot or suspense or mystery.

I’m fine with movies mostly dodging around smartphones. I think about this stupid addictive brick enough every day.

Our lives don't have less drama in them now because of technology but it has changed. The Curse is a great example of contemporary story writing that embraces technology and attempts to portray the change to modern conflict.

I think the only time a lack of cellphones would be an issue would be in, say, crime/legal/thriller movies where not addressing them as an option could lead to obvious weird plot holes

But in genres like comedies and dramas based largely around scenes of people just interacting with each other in-person, I don’t think many viewers would really notice if they just ignored the existence of cellphones entirely. Or that characters only ever used them *as* phones on occasion

What’s always annoying and awkwardly done is when they depict text convos. It’s always the same clunky format every time

Past Lives is a good example of a grounded story that’s dependent on the internet. Without modern tech, they would have never found each other online, nor re-bonded over video chats

Then when any characters are actually face-to-face, none of them spend any time looking at their phones, and nobody watching the movie notices/cares
