There was no (good)reason for it to be removed from the Iphone but they did. For the sake of brand continuity, there should be a lightning port on the MacBooks instead of headphone jacks.

Really bummed no SD card slot tbh. But if I can muster up $3-4K why nottt.

They removed it to have space for other components inside the limited chassis size they wanted to build. Even as someone who hated the decision I still think you're reaching here

It's not reaching to want headphones that work with more than one product.

I was thinking about upgrading, but I will continue to use my early-2011 MacBook Pro. The new prices are a big turn off for me. I'm also disappointed Apple didn't reduce the cost of the 2015 MacBook Pro.

So the solution is to remove the actual standardize open connector in the name of standardizing with two devices on the market?

I have a late 2008 model that I've been putting off upgrading and saving up for a new one, I'm biting the bullet and ordering a space grey 13' with the touch bar

  8. Eliminating the jack allows for the device to be more water proof

Please stop pushing this, they got rid of the headphone jack because it took up more space internally than they wanted it to. There are plenty of other phones that have the same water resistance rating as the iPhone and have a headphone jack, and the open speaker grills and needing to balance internal and external pressure will always be the primary difficulties in water proofing a device. The headphone jack is relatively easy to waterproof by comparison.

As a massive Apple fan, a little disappointed by the MBP pricewise and port wise. Touch Bar looks really cool and versatile, especially with Photoshop, but I'm not sure it's worth the premium over a MacBook without it. Also not sure if removing basically all the useful fucking ports from the MBP and replacing them with Thunderbolt is the right move for Pro users. I'm fine with removing them from the regular MacBook - most people I know with a laptop just use it for Facebook and web browsing. But I'm not carrying around dongles for everything. I use every port on my MBP and iMac on a daily basis for work and at home, and I can't imagine the majority of pro users won't at least raise their eyebrow at Apple in this instance. Also, storage capacities for stock MBPs are laughable. What's weird is I see these things Microsoft are doing with the Surface and though I hate Windows, I sort of envy their drive and current string of products. Too bad they run Windows.

I'm on board with Apple pushing towards the future, but I feel Apple is pushing too much on a prosumer demographic. Probably the only thing recently for me that seems like a "miss" from Apple in my opinion.

  11. What do you need the ports for that won't be USB C in a year?

When will your iPhone/iPad ship with a USB-C to lighting cable? Or am I just expect to dole out another $25 for that.

  13. Probably next year. And if you're dropping 2k on a Mac and don't wanna buy one new cable, don't know what to say.

Bummed about the AirPods delay - I have to wonder whether it's got anything to do with supply issues, rather than a technical problem seeing as the review units don't seem to have any problems. Would not surprise me if they've realised they've massively underestimated the demand for the AirPods and they're rushing to get their stock up by mid-November ahead of the Christmas rush. The forecasting and supply problems they've had with the 7 Plus might have made them a little more jittery on this than usual.

The new MacBook Pro looks very impressive, but I'm satisfied with my 12" MacBook for the time being. Portability continues to be a bigger issue for me than performance.

  16. the worst part about the new MBP is no more MagSafe :tear:

  17. but my favorite part of the keynote today was the reveal of the TV app - this app is the TV equivalent of Apple Music and it's probably the beginning of the end of the iTunes Store (still years away) and at the very least the end of purchasing TV shows and movies in the iTunes store. This is also probably setting the groundwork up for a TV subscription service too.

  18. and if Apple and Netflix can come to agreement soon then that TV app will be absolutely perfect for me

The new Apple TV app is: TV

To me though that is the worst argument for things like this. You spent a shit load of money so what is an extra X amount of dollars to buy an extra for it.

My 2010 MacBook is on its last legs so I'm glad these finally got announced. That said, they're somehow a lot more expensive than I'd anticipated. Maybe that's silly of me, ha.

I recently wiped the HD on my 2009 MBD and it's running like a dream. So as much I'd like a new one...can't justify it.

The standard 15" only has two USB-C. At most times at my desk I'm plugged into a monitor (plus a second), have an SD card plugged in, have an external hard drive plugged in, and a barcode scanner plugged in. Occasionally I have different printers and plotters I have to use, one of which is not on a wireless network. When I'm on the move, I'm still using the SD card, barcode printers and HDMI to connect to displays at our remote office. This doesn't include when I'm connecting other things as well.

Don't understand why they removed legacy ports on the MBP when they kept the audio jack, which they made a whole speech about on the iPhone. USB-C will be a standard, but it won't be for a bit. I think a better approach would have been to include 2 USB-C ports and a mix of other ports – either the SD card slot, the HDMI, one older USB, or whatever. I'm okay with one dongle, but to have to buy a pile of them to interface with this year's tech one year from now isn't very pro-friendly.
