I don’t know if I’d classify all those who are not voting for Biden as part of a strategy to push Democrats left (maybe some number of voters are thinking that way, who knows), I think it’s more that a lot of people don’t want to vote for a candidate enthusiastically supporting genocide, and we’re faced with two of the most ancient and vile pro-genocide candidates the country has to offer

this is what I'm saying - a lot of the discussion that I am reading is people making a principled stand against something that they feel incredibly strongly about and other people pointing out that doing that may not be the best political strategy at the moment, which really looks to me like two separate discussions

wait, if taking a principled stance against genocide is considered unhelpful how is it helpful to highlight how cool of a working environment the trump white house was ???

Voted uncommitted in our primary over the weekend. A small and likely meaningless gesture but felt good to give Biden the middle finger

It was someone making fun of the alt right for being sexless losers because one of them posted a clip of Sydney Sweeney saying goodnight at the end of SNL with her boobs showing with the caption “woke is dead” lol

It’s also just replying to that person’s really dumb point of “we have to show the world we don’t support Israel by not voting for Biden” because the winner of the race if Biden doesn’t win is pretty much on record of saying he wants to wipe out the Palestinians…like I don’t think there’s any second layer to that tweet, it’s just pointing out the obvious that Biden not winning isn’t going to send any message to the world about us not truly supporting Israel lol. There are valid arguments to be made about not voting (though given the stakes I obviously think also those arguments are wrong), but “let’s let Trump win to send a message that we’re anti-Israel” is very much not one of them.

I don’t know if anyone here seriously believes it, but over the last few weeks a lot of the online left seems to have bought into this idea that if we just “punish” Joe Biden this election by sticking to our principles on Palestine, then damn it a message will be sent that America is truly not with Israel, and the Dems will HAVE to make a shift to the left to win the next election. Like these people seem to truly think letting Trump win will somehow help the Palestinians AND shift Dem strategy to the left. Which they then use to justify any danger or damage Trump will do to other groups of people, both Americans and abroad, because it’s both principled AND for the greater good.

But Joe Biden will get no “punishment”, he’ll just not be President anymore, and he’ll be okay. And there hasn’t been a losing political party out there that has thought after a loss/multiple losses that they didn’t need to shift towards the middle to try and attract more voters, since that’s where more reliable/constat voters currently are. So if you’re doing it just on principles, that’s fine…but don’t lie or delude yourself into thinking it’s for the greater good.

The bottom line is: A Trump Presidency is going to be a hell of a lot worse for millions of more people, including the Palestinians, than a Biden 2nd term will be. Full stop. Theres no getting around that fact. If you’re okay with that, that’s fine, for some people it’s more important to be principled about one or a few issues. That’s okay! It’s a valid belief system that extends way beyond Israel/palestine, just think about all the pro life/pro choice people out there that are so staunchly life/choice that they can’t fathom voting for the other party because of it. But I think you’ll continue to get pushback and arguments about it if you lie to yourself or others about how actually it’ll lead to the desired outcomes you want. It’s definitely not going to do that. It’s just what feels right based on your beliefs.
I think some online liberals see arguments like that being made and can’t control themselves and start making dumb arguments that completely disregard people’s feelings on Palestine and then, as you say, around and around we go.

It also feels important to note at this point that this really only consumes likes what, 20% of us max? The rest of the voting electorate is like “Biden seems old” and “vibes are off” or “Trump says mean things” and vote based on that and don’t really give a shit about principled voting vs. harm reduction or policy goals and etc. I don’t know if that’s more or less depressing tbh

I think focusing on people who tweet “punish Biden if Trump wins it’ll send a message” is misguided because I don’t think there are actually earnestly that many people who are doing that. Tweeting it sure, but again, how many people actually earnestly are engaging with this election that way?

If you don’t want another Trump term I’d be really pissed at Biden for being so pro-genocide in the face of that stance’s massive unpopularity. If the discussion is about the genocide in Palestine and the relation to American electoral politics, Biden is actively losing voters. There are those who deeply don’t want to vote for a candidate funding and supporting this genocide, and then those saying “we have to vote for the candidate funding and supporting this genocide because other stuff will be worse if Trump gets elected and the genocide will continue anyway”. The former approach ignores the easiest way to reach those who don’t want to vote for Biden and his genocidal policies is for Biden to abandon the genocidal policies. It ignores how deeply unpopular those policies are with key voting blocks in important states. It also ignores the fact that genocide is an atrocity to the point that many believe in a moral/international obligation to stop it, and we should use every avenue we have available to oppose it, which may mean not voting for the man who loudly and enthusiastically supports the genocide (whatever leaks we get suggesting he’s annoyed by Netanyahu or whatever notwithstanding).

im not fully confident but I also think these polls are way off what the race is gonna be imo. Biden also is taking too long to get started campaigning imo. I mean I should be seeing some ads already imo. He doesn’t have a primary to worry about so start giving me some ads, emphasize accomplishments, tell people your plan for 2nd term because as of right now I have no idea what it is

It is wild how perfectly David encapsulates the "white moderate" that MLK just bodied in the Letter from a Birmingham Jail.
