I also think it limited any sort of public events where less familiar candidates could have got in front of people.

The DNC shutting down Bernie Sanders, the only legitimate progressive candidate of the past 20 years, was the final straw for me. They don't want any real change and will do anything to protect the status quo.

Biden's big draw in 2020 was getting back to "normal," which was pretty damn enticing. Right now there's no vision for what he'd do in a second term other than "stop Trump again," which would be nice, but then we have 4 years to fill after that.

Personally, I don't care if he gets up in front of a podium and starts rambling on about onion belts, so long as there are competent people underneath him that can get work done on issues that are important to me. But every time they try to show some competence as an administration they do the opposite.

  4. Let's ask AI:
There is no specific information available regarding the number of successful primaries of a sitting president. However, it is generally rare for a sitting president to face significant opposition within their own party during the primary process. Incumbent presidents typically have a strong advantage and tend to secure their party's nomination without major challenges. Exceptions to this have been observed in historical cases such as Franklin Pierce in 1856 and more recent examples like Jimmy Carter in 1980. [^1] [^2]

Also no incumbent has ever been 81 years old.

And that 1980 challenge was not even close and Carter had an even worse approval rating than Biden does.

On the flipside to that, Carter had even worse approval rating than Biden does and Carter won by double digits in that primary.

  8. I don't think any of us would like any of the younger Democratic nominees either. Can't think of anyone with a "D" after their name I would be remotely excited about voting for.

Yeah I think most of the reason Joe is unpopular (Gaza, Covid etc) is one thousand percent the official byline of the democratic primary

yeah they'd all probably me more progressive than Biden but they're still not DemSoc or anything like that. It's a mixutre of people who have either had good acheivemetns in their states or are charismatic/good speakers.

I'd probably take Newsome over any of them but his mixed record in CA on both sides of the spectrum (vetoing progressive legislation, "soft on crime"/CA being regulation heavy, etc) could be dangerous. But he's by far the best I've seen of Dem candidates at making the case for himself/whatever policies he supports. He seems to have the knowledge of issues someone like Pete has but without the mealy mouthed explanations and better at pivoting than Pete is/was

Also this is exacerbated by the two party system and it not being a parliamentary system but the political strongman idea that has become the US Presidency is really annoying to me, from a variety of angles.

  14. I think the average voter is gonna go 51/49 if we put David vs You on the ballot at this point ;-p
