My students are usually just watching sports highlights. Depressingly, usually of themselves.

One time walked by a kid with a gigantic grandparent-size tablet googling "anal fissures" though.

An ostrich generally would mess most people up.

    What about an emu though?

I think you run into the strong leg problem once again. A stray kick from one of them could kill you

I'm not a teacher but I work with kids and the younger elementary kids read a lot and are excited about books but not the older kids/youth. Which is how I felt too. I was obsessed with books and reading as a kid. I was the loser kid who started reading the dictionary once I ran out of books to read and reread. But once school assigned various books and textbook reading I didn't read for pleasure anymore. I probably didn't read for fun from middle school until after I graduated from college because school sucked all the fun out of reading for me.

But now I at least see some older kids and youth reading graphic novels and Manga and stuff which was a more niche interest when I was growing up. If they read they're typically reading that kinda stuff

I thought that, but can it fully go into its shell? If so, how do you kill it? Does punching its belly do anything?

Yyep, def catch some kids watching their own "Highlights" on hudl.

I've been slack on the chromebook control because the phoens are the bigger problem anyway for us still right now, but I've started getting better about using the GoGuardian tool to block dumb stuff. Had to start blocking chatgpt as well because I caught a few AP Gov kids using it to write their FRQ answers on tests.

yeah even as someone who loved school school kinda sucks, you can't read for fun and you are up earlier than any human should be aware, no wonder kids are distracted

I do notice in the districts around me they're starting school later in the morning than I had to go. But then it also ends later which is hard for me as a community partner who needs to see kids/pick them up from school and sometimes they don't get home from school until right before I get off work so I have to work late lol. But I'd rather the kids get some extra sleep

I loved school until middle school. I mean most of the dislike was also due to just angst and puberty and all that being awful. But it was kinda jarring to go from like early education where there is lots of play-based learning to placement tests and long essays and stuff. But of course there were those great teachers along the way that still made it fun, but they were more of the exception.

I need to be in at 6:30 and my kids start at 7. It is brutal. However with block scheduling, I'm done teaching by 12:20 every day and I have an hour lunch midday.

Put some gibberish in white pt. 1 font between the lines/paragraphs of the assignment prompt. If they copy paste the prompt into ChatGPT it'll incorporate the nonsense.

Some school districts start at 7:15 in the morning for high school here. That means you are waking up at 5 or so if you take a long bus ride. The student aren't awake for third period.

School is mostly a waste of time and as the access to knowledge has changed dramatically over the last quarter-century school has struggled to keep up with the new reality. If it wasn't for the fact that it is a huge babysitter and free food distributor they would have even less value.

Honestly I don't remember free food being a thing at all until more recent years.

Access to knowledge has definitely changed, but being taught how to acquire and use/apply that knowledge is still important. But I do think we really need to re-think how we do certain things. I'm a social studies teacher so I'm biased but mayyyybe not every kid needs to take Algebra II and pre-calc? Maybe? ANd maybe they should have more social science classes isntead?

Free breakfast and lunch has been around forever. I remember that back in kindergarten. When the COVID shutdowns were going on most districts sent out buses full of hot meals because most families relied on them.

WHen I was little they had free and reduced lunch programs for sure but even in a blue state it was pretty restrictive from what I remember, not too many people qualified. We went fully free during COVID and I think just last year they went back to paying because the covid funds ran out, but I know the state has been working on making it free again (even possible that they have already and I just missed it)

I got free/reduced lunch because we were lower income but it def wasn't an across the board thing

A lot of schools here don't start until 9am or so. But it also depends. 8 is on the earlier end here from my experience. They often stagger start and end times which is what kills me. because of staggering I've def had fun instances where I drop one sibling off at middle school and then we have to kill an hour before I can drop the siblings off at the elementary school right next door.

I know my population is the minority (hopefully) of the school but schools are the bane of my existence haha. The other fun part is when they expect me to know their specific pickup/dropoff line rules and such because they probably presume most parents learned this at an open house. But I don't, so please talk to me like I'm 5 and tell me where to go!
