Despite what I said above, I could probably be convinced to agree.

Yeah I was hoping some more substantial case related stuff was gonna happen. Not just the last two minutes, but good episode. Some great character stuff and it was good to see Evangeline get more emotional.

The trigger warning at the beginning of the episode really telegraphed what could have been a heart-wrenching surprise. There’s gotta be a better way to do that stuff.

This is reminding me of an r-rated x-files.

  4. Great ep. Whole final sequence was unnerving and suspenseful. I wanna feel bad for the Prior kid, but he just keeps saying yes to Danvers every time.

wasn't it just a warning for flashing lights or something? what did that telegraph?

I don’t know. This episode was a little better because it was suspenseful but it still fell kinda flat at the end. It’s not a very good detective story and it’s really not very good horror so far. Still a whole movie’s worth of time left though

only 2 episodes left kinda sucks because I felt like they made some decent character development but I would assume the next 2 episodes are going to be case heavy because we haven't really gotten much about the case

Missed this and the Curb premiere for the grammy’s last night, but glad to see it’s a little better than the previous episodes. Gonna catch up tonight

lol just came to post that.

it still feels a little scatter brained the way they are sequencing scenes and ricocheting around character to character/event to event, but I am still all in on “what the hell is going on in this town”

My main take on this so far is that I feel like Issa Lopez is a really great director of horror and a really spotty writer of a crime story if that makes sense?

    These episodes have felt like:
-Protagonist 1 stares at the clues/mysterious videos/documents they stumbled upon in the last episode. Has no idea what to do with them but tosses some feelers out there.
-Protagonist 1 gets a phone call: "Hey, we found something"
-Protagonist 1 and Protagonist 2 drive to go see the "something", and while they're in the car, they have a little Character Development chat
-They see the new fucked up and mysterious thing they have no idea what to do with, until the next "Hey someone found something" phone call comes in.

The seams of the storytelling are just really apparent and I feel like it's alternating between plot and character development in an inorganic, mechanical way that's been keeping me at a bit at a distance.

Also more of a single episode complaint but "the stoic and tormented Tough Violent Cop reacts to tragedy by getting beat up rather than deal with the emotional pain" is such a predictable trope that it really blunted my emotional reaction to what happened there.

Made the mistake of going to r/truedetective and my goodness people in there are shitting all over this and praising SEASON TWO of all things. This isn't great, but it's keeping me entertained and interested. The two are on different stratospheres as far as I'm concerned.

I mean, yes… but also no? Haha I guess I need to see how it ends first to know if I’m right or if there’s a twist. But it sure seems like it’s just gonna be “the curse” is behind it all. While I guess still doesn’t make sense to me as I have zero context for it, but if that’s the answer, it can just vaguely explain it all.

lol yeah I’m not very high on this but it’s still easily better than season 2

yeah i feel like her writing lets down her directing, the reverse sorkin if you will

so far this is the worst season

I didn't get on with season 2 at the time but something about it makes me want to try it again. It was at least trying something even if it failed.

Night Country feels generic in comparison. The idea of a season of True Detective set on a research facility in Alaska should be giving us so much more than this.

Yeah, season 1 is near perfect imo up to the incredibly corny and out of character dialogue at the end of the finale. Season 3 is an underrated and often beautiful season of TV. This season is just kinda whatever, with sometimes a fun thing happening. Season 2 is among the worst television I’ve ever seen in my life, one of the few things i can’t believe I sat all the way through.

s2 was a let down coming right after s1 but the arc with kitsch's character and colin's performance the last two episodes is better than anything this season has done so far (obviously willing to delete this when episodes 5 & 6 turn out great)

if they didn't have the rips bong once skullfuck your dad's corpse line and the stupid fukanaga caricature i don't think people would hate it as much

I never watched 3. Quick question on that for those who have:

I heard it's about alzheimer's or something...is that a late season twist spoiler?

Not a spoiler. Whole thing follows a man suffering from memory loss. Mahershala Ali acts his ass off. It’s a beautiful performance.

yeah s3 might be my favorite at this point. doesn't have the highs of season 1 but more consistently compelling
