That Nascimiento album is absolutely incredible.

Love that you’re listening to Pharoah. I like Karma a lot but I’ll say if you dig him I strongly recommend giving Thembi a listen eventually too. One of my favorite jazz albums

Listened to Janet Jackson's The Velvet Rope. I didn't realise it was a double album going in, but I did basically zero research on any of these albums!

My first thought was that this reminded me of Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, particularly how the skits / non musical tracks connect the songs together, and the general blending of soul music and hip-hop. However, Miseducation came out a year later, so the influence is probably going the other way. There's a lot more dance and electronica stuff on this as well.

I do wish it was a bit shorter (which is my boring, standard response to my first listen to double albums), as I found myself flagging a little towards the end, but I was really into it at parts, and despite it's length, it does work very well as a cohesive album.

    Pharoah Sanders - Tauhid
An album like this absolutely needs more listens, but on first impression I like "Aum/Venus/Capricorn Rising" the most out of the tracks. I am going to jump into Coltrane's Ascension, and then either circle back to Tauhid or do Deaf Dumb Blind.

The Beach Boys - Surf's Up

Outside of the songs that everyone knows, I've never listened to much music from The Beach Boys. The only other album I'd ever heard in full prior to this one was Pet Sounds. I chose this album based solely on the cover which is at odds with everything I've ever associated with the band (and it's also an image that my father had no less than 3 copies of in our house growing up), so I figured this should be the one I listened to.

I guess I should have guessed that it wouldn't be the sunny pop music I was expecting from them. I did like a fair amount of what I heard, especially on the first half, but I'm not sure how often I'll come back to any of it. Heavy themes aren't what I'm looking for if I'm reaching for a Beach Boys album. Much of it sounds like The Beach Boys filtered through a dystopian night rather than a sun soaked beach and, in the end, I think I'd rather have the sun from these guys.

Surprisingly, "Disney Girls (1957)" was the song that resonated with me the most. As someone who often escapes into older media when I'm feeling depressed (VHS tapes/old baseball games I watched as a kid, etc.), it really is a very comforting song for me. I was listening to it again as I wrote this and started to hear a little bit of "Grow Old With You" from The Wedding Singer in the verses, though, so that's an interesting development as well.

Oh, and "Take a Load Off Your Feet" is so hilariously out of place on this album and made me laugh every time I heard it.

Doesn’t get much better than Surf’s Up fer me, but if you want something sunnier in the post Smile era that’s still kinda odd, you might dig Wild Honey and Friends.

they’re like 25 mins too, easy listens

"Wild Mountain Honey" is one of my favorite Steve Miller Band songs, so, to be fair, if the cover of Surf's Up hadn't caught my eye, I probably would've picked that one based on the title lol. Will listen to it later today
