Just gave a focused listen to that new Caligula's Horse song "Golem" and wow, I loved it. That soaring part about three and a half minutes in really captivated me. I really liked what I heard on "The World Breathes With Me" too but that one will need many more listens, obviously.

Yeah I love that part as well. The structure of the song is really cool because it goes into that when you think it should go to the chorus. It subverts expectations in little ways like that throughout the song. Yeah The World Breathes With Me is a lot to take in, it’s probably best broken into 3 sections. The first 3-4 minutes are an extended intro, then the meat of the song, then the outro with the absolutely filthy riff.

I promise y’all when this albums comes out I will not shut up about it all year. I’ve listened to Golem an unhealthy amount and it’s still the first song I want to listen to when I step in the car or turn on music in my office for the first time that day.

i have not listened to any of the new c horse tracks because I am strong (and still mad about haken releasing nightingale nearly a year before fauna came out)

I just recently got into Haken, and that’s wild. Def an album highlight that must have lost its luster a little from being out for so long.

I'm still fanboying over here, so probably can't quite give an objective opinion, but it definitely meets the unrealistically high expectations I had for it. Part of me wishes they didn't release The World Breathes With Me as a single, but if they hadn't, I don't think I would've caught the callback to it in Mute.

I will say, I'm glad the Charcoal Grace songs stand on their own individually, but stronger as a whole. Like Haken's Messiah Complex, I think it'd be weird to listen to it out of sequence, or to take a part out, but all four songs feel connected but still able to stand on their own.

Won tickets to see Tool and Elder tonight. Can't find anyone to go with me so I might go it alone. Seems like it could be an interesting experience to solo a Tool show though.

This was cool. I’m a very casual fan, and they mostly played stuff from the new album but I’m not super into that one, more of a Lateralus and 10,000 Days fan. Danny Carey is crazy.

It is wild that Tool somehow got buy in from the general alt rock audience and now almost exclusively play songs live that are 10+ minutes long with odd time signatures and extended instrumental sections.

I think I'm a bit let down by the Caligula's Horse, unfortunately. The opening tracks are fantastic but the four-parter and the overall album arc/concept feels strained to me. I wonder if there was resistance to how the last album pulled back and was more of a "here's some rock songs" type deal... I don't think they're always playing to their strengths this round. still a couple serious jams though

I don't know whether In Contact was supposed to have a "story" or not but dude's lyrics are so vague/allegorical that I never felt much need to give it any thought lol

Bummer, maybe it’ll grow on you. From what I remember of press around Rise Radiant, it was more written like an album they wanted to have fun playing live, which is why I think they’re overall shorter, more straightforward songs. Which is ironic because they never got to tour on it because of COVID.

In Contact did have some concept, but heck if I know what it is. I love albums that have a grand scope with a backdrop of some concept happening, but I usually don’t ever actually look too deep into what it is.

I would give it a chance to grow. I think it’s more dense than RR, so the new songs took longer to click, but I love it all the way through after 7-8 listens.

According to last.fm I'm 16 listens deep of Charcoal Grace. The cool things sticking out now are the melodic callbacks in the title track suite, like there's a guitar melody early on in A World Without that is the chorus melody for Give Me Hell. Similar things are happening between The World Breathes With Me and Mute. I see a lot of talk about this being less catchy, and I do agree, but The Stormchaser is one of the best songs here, and that's in part due to how good and catchy the chorus is. Anyway. I'll probably use this thread as my outlet to talk about how much I love this album, haha.

In an effort to not wear out that Caligula’s Horse album, I’m rotating in other albums in a similar space I haven’t given enough time to. Mainly the two newest Periphery and TesseracT albums. Wax Wings and Dracul Gras off that Periphery album are stupid good songs.

Man, I could talk about that Periphery album all day. It’s them at their wildest, in my opinion. The heavy’s heavier, the pretty is prettier, the progressive is proggier.

I’m still trying to digest the new Caligula’s Horse. I liked all three singles off the bat, just trying to familiarize myself with the rest, let it gel, and see how I feel about it.

I remember listening when it came out, but just wasn't in the mood to listen I guess. I did go back and skim P4, and while Reptile is still an insane song, it feels somewhat thin after that. P5 seems to keep the quality up through the whole thing, and I even like Silhouette which seems controversial. But yeah, Wax Wings feels like them at their catchiest and brightest, and that ending rules (the machines are TURNING ME!). Dracul Gras wears that Meshuggah influence on its sleeve and then has one of Spencer's best choruses.

The consensus online seems to be the new CHorse is a little more dense and less hooky than Rise Radiant, and definitely takes some repeated listens to reveal itself. I can't even recall hooks easily, even though I do love every song at this point.

listening to the Aviations album last year and it's really doing it for me. Really warm feeling stuff, kinda like a fusion of The Dear Hunter and The Contortionist, but with more jazz.

I need to revisit. I listened initially and thought it sounded great but almost a little too flashy and virtuosic and not enough songwriting ability.

I have to give it a listen. PII is still my favorite album by them. The last song I really got hooked on was Lune..near perfect closer, imo. The later stuff jussttt crosses the line into being too heavy for my taste.

I get that. You’ll definitely want to skip “Everything Is Fine!” (Spoiler: Everything is NOT fine). That said, their latest album is like a big, wild mixture of everything they’ve done. I like to think of the album as Periphery maximized in every aspect. It’s all just cranked to extremes.
