Just feels like they're tricking audiences. There are people that are fans of musicals that would go in a heart beat if they knew what they were getting into, compared to the amount of people who you risk walking out and cheating out of their money the minute music starts.

They did the same thing to "Wonka." It's very weird, especially considering just a few years ago we had multiple movie-musicals that, at the very least, were critical successes. Maybe the failure of "West Side Story" scared every studio too bad.

Cheated out of their money = they already paid.

Yes, but if you pay thinking you're just going to see a standard comedy and end up having a musical number every 10 minutes and you are one of the people in the world that absolutely hate musicals. I'd imagine you'd be a little mad.

You would think that Paramount would want this to have legs, considering the decent reviews.

But burying that it’s a musical, I don’t know if that’s gonna happen. And they likely don’t care because it’s more content for Paramount+.

I think at one point it was supposed to get dumped directly onto Paramount+ so I'm shocked this even got a theatrical release to be honest.

That would explain why it’s so cheap looking. It looks like it had a quarter of the budget of the first.

Is this the movie version of the Broadway play? Same songs and such?

Yes + 1 new song made for the movie, but the plot is a tad bit different in parts

I didn't hate the musical aspect, but feel like they could have re-written the script a little more. Felt like a cover version of the original movie.

West Side Story was so good, loved it. It's a bummer it didn't do well. Very dated story and generally an unknown cast, so I get it.

I saw the stage version of this on Broadway in 2018, and really enjoyed it. I've always loved musicals, but yep, movie musicals can be very touch and go. Will probably catch this on streaming.

It's a bit deceiving that this wasn't transparently marketed as a musical but it makes it even more confusing that it's named the exact same as the original.

What was the reasoning? Did they want to sneakily get the songs to trend on TikTok or something?

The idea to not market it (and Wonka) as a musical was apparently based on research saying that people don’t want to see musicals.

I saw it today and actually really enjoyed it! It doesn’t touch the original with a ten foot pole but it was way better than I expected.

Also, regarding that clip that went viral with the audience groaning - that was actually the fourth song so I’m not sure what the deal is there, lol.

this was great minus some of the songs sounding off and the egregious product placement, lost it at the iCarly joke
also dumping this on Paramount + would have been so dumb was so fun seeing it with a packed audience

Thought this was mostly fine. Biggest gripe was probably Gretchen and that it just wasn't as funny as the original imo. Gretchen was the most iconic character for me in the original, and she just didn't have much to do in this one at all. Kinda felt like the actress was phoning it in. Something just felt off about her. I'm glad they took out a lot of the problematic stuff from the original. Renee Rapp has a killer voice.
