it is very hard for me to think of something as simultaneously uninteresting and unnecessary as ryan adams' 1989, even if it is intended with the utmost sincerity its always feel closer to generic acoustic youtube covers of rap or pop hits than something like johnny cash's "hurt"

Doesn't seem mad to me. More annoyed if anything.

Also, as I said before, haven't listened in forever, but did he change lyrics to any of the other songs besides Style? Because it's been mentioned a few times in this thread that he "twisted the entire album to fit his image".

I love both records for entirely different reasons. I too find it kind of cheesy when artists change pronouns, but I think it actually worked in his favor.

I'd have to agree that the backlash of calling it a masterpiece compared to the original is a ridiculously disturbing thing.. but I think that's a completely different issue than him covering the record in the first place. I would argue his intentions if anything were to SHOW how truly well written songs they were to an audience that is less open to appreciating a female pop artist. I think at that point, the bad judgement comes from the listener. I don't think it was distasteful of him to cover a female's record. Clearly he had no idea the "controversy" that would spark from it, hence why he's kinda pissed..

That being said, I've certainly read a lot of disgusting comments on it. Half of them are just ignorant to pop music in general, and the other half are grossly sexist. In a perfect world this would be such a non-issue, but sadly people..

It's been a long time since I listened to the Adams' version, I think the only song I thought was good was Style, because that's just a universally perfect song. Anybody could cover it and it'd sound great.

I covered a Taylor Swift song for one of our Chorus comps a few months ago and didn't even think to switch the pronouns because it just didn't matter to me haha. The thought didn't even occur to me. That said, I don't see the problem with a person (especially a professional musician) covering songs they're extremely passionate about and switching around some of the words to display how they personally relate to the album.

The blame shouldn't fall 100% on him for this, but I do think Ryan is at least slightly at fault for the men and women alike that claim he "fixed" Taylor's album. He made a bigger deal about the recording process and release of the album than was necessary, which definitely led to the feeling that it was less of a "cousin album" and more of a direct competitor.

Anyway the album was super boring and Taylor's is awesome. If this discussion hadn't started in here I would gone on forgetting Ryan's versions even existed haha.

I like doing Ryan Adam's take on 1989 more than anything he's actually ever done but also I'm not really a fan of his.

I'm sure (hope) the press/interviews he did alongside Taylor kind of took away from the idea that it was a competing record

  15. Side note one time I was driving by myself like 6-7 years ago singing along to Surprise Surprise by The Starting Line, and I said "this guy his name is Trev" instead of "Ken" and immediately felt so weird and never did it again and I've never told anybody about this and I'm so sorry Kenny

  18. My girlfriend and I have a weird joke where if we hear that Pearl Jam song, the lyric gets changed to "can't find a butter man". I don't remember why

I also sing a lot of songs to my dog and inject as many dog puns and mentions of her name as possible. I don't think there's a thing in this world she enjoys more lol

  19. i like to change lyrics because i don't know the actual words...

  21. Maybe to you and I, but to some fart that "wants rock back on the radio" (which unfortunately describes too many people), the genuine adoration Ryan has for the record is totally lost. I feel like that's where a lot of shitty comments comparing the albums come from, anyway.

Way too much arguing over a boring cover album of a great pop record.

I like Ryan's album a lot. It's not as good as the original, but it still gets a lot of play from me. I like having two versions I can listen to, depending on my mood.

I loved it on first listen, liked it on second listen, and now I don't like it. It was a weird progression. I think "Bad Blood" is the best one on there
