There’s deliberately making something sound bad/different, and there’s shooting for something in the realm of normal and ending up utterly off - the latter is maybe more interesting for this theme to me

True but it’s also more rare! I also think what @JRGComedy said about first albums is extremely on point. There’s a third option which is “band aiming for something in the realm of normal but they don’t have the budget for it yet.” Regardless I think this is gonna be a really interesting playlist and I’m excited to see how everybody approached the theme.

It’s funny because most of the time when a lot of people on this forum say that a rock song sounds bad I usually think it sounds good

Haha I *also* considered putting a song from The Blackest Beautiful on this list.

I have so many mixtape songs and radio bootlegs that I can’t use for this on my computer, this round is pissing me off lol

Had to know Gutter Phenomenon and The Blackest Beautiful would be here! Those sound like shit!

  9. Three records that came to mind that I didn't pick from:

    Manchester Orchestra - Cope
    Turnstile - Nonstop Feeling
Balance and Composure - The Things We Think We're Missing

Yooooo this is fascinating. I agree on Gutter Phenomenon, especially when stacked against everything that came later in ETID’s catalog.

But that Lonely the Brave song is killer, and I feel like the way the vocals sound like they are shouted from the back corner of a room actually serves the song well. Also has made for some interesting misunderstood lyrics lol. I might still have to give that some votes though, I truly love that song.

I knew Bleachers was going to be on here lol

My pick was going to be I Can Feel You By MCS but I changed it at the last minute.

Crazy good playlist so far. Love these first five tracks and can't wait to listen to the rest later. Soberish was a really good pick - song could be so much better than it is with different production

Really impressed with the variety in this playlist!

I do have beef with the Charly Bliss pick though. They ended up recording Guppy twice because they didn’t like how it originally sounded! You can really notice how hollow/garagey the original production was in the Ruby video:

I think this is the playlist with the most new stuff for me so far

  18. Damn, I genuinely think that Balance and Compure record sounds really good lol

I almost pulled something from American Pleasure Club's A Whole Fucking Lifetime of This or Crime in Stereo's I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone.

  19. "Louie Louie" is a great pick. Echoing that the Lonely the Brave song rules, kind of sounds like a mix of Baroness and Have a Nice Life. Also really enjoyed the Ruston Kelly song.

Love Liz Phair, hadn't heard that song before, some of the vocal effects going on are genuinely baffling lol

  23. I forgot how good Charly Bliss was. And Incendiary. Lmao

"Ruin" is my favorite Hovvdy song. I don't think that track sounds bad at all for an acoustic demo!

Wikipedia doesn't source the quote, but it says:

"it was mastered and mixed to have a "more human" and "organic" sound."
