Most good answers have been brought up already and this isn’t to say they deserve the title but I’d throw in the Velvet Underground and the Ramones as bands who deserve consideration, particularly in regards to influence. I’d pause before calling either one the greatest American rock band but both were pretty important

there have been some bad opinions but not liking Tom Petty is pretty far up there as one of the absolute worst

If we’re talking strictly influence and impact it’s very obviously The Beach Boys and anything else is laughable at best, and that would probably still be true if the only song they ever released was good vibrations

I don't think just any solo artist would count. The ones being mentioned in here are solo artists with very well-established, stable, and distinctive backing bands that were extremely important to their legacies. I guess you could make an argument for Elvis's TCB Band, but there was a little more turnover in that band than in, like, The Heartbreakers, which might hurt their case.

It's not strictly influence and impact. It's those things, but also strength and consistency of output over the entirety of a career, lingering popularity, etc. In which case, Mike Love's bastardization of the Beach Boys brand probably hurts them a lot.

Even as a fan of The Hold Steady, I have to give it up: this is extremely funny.

Every time this prompt comes around I always put my oar in for considering Earth, Wind & Fire as the best American band.

I generally like most of the Zac Bryan songs I’ve heard, but if I hear Remember one more time I’m gonna lose it.

I know I've seen them recommended quite a few times around the site, finally listened to some Hot Mulligan and they're probably in my top 10 of obnoxious vocals

Like stop yelling at me. It's exhausting to listen to

This current wave of emo or whatever really doesn’t do it for me (aside from Anxious if you count them)

I tried Hot Mulligan multiple times and just don't get it, feels very bland and unspecific

I think “Armadillo” was the track to first grab me. They are absolutely doing something different than other bands of the ilk in terms of pop songwriting. I think the “I Won’t Reach Out to You” EP is probably the best place to start. This video too

yeah some of the vocal melody that HM does is unlike any pop punk band I’ve ever heard

Cheem is also doing a similar thing, but I think HM is better. It’s like 00s pop on their best songs

I’ve all but given up on the genre but Hot Mulligan were one of my most listened to bands last year
