  1. It's hard to argue against the Dead if you think longevity should be part of the judgement but you can search my posts on here for more info

Yes. They pretty much served as the seminal American Pop Rock band. They blended Doo Wop, R&B, Classical, Psychedelia, but they were still a rock band.

Though, if backing bands are in the conversation, The Heartbreakers and The E-Street Band are both up there.

Does Fleetwood Mac count as an American rock band? 2/5th of them were American, and the two Americans in FM were arguably the most prominent members.

The two people that started Fleetwood Mac - who the band is named after - are British, so that’s a pretty cut and dry “no”

  8. iCarly Rae Jepsen

Talking Heads probably also wouldn't count because David Byrne is Scotish

For the life of me I will never understand what people hear in Tom Petty. Plod, plod, plod.

Tom Petty is the epitome of dudes rock, just a cool guy from Florida chilling with his friends

“Plod, plod, plod,” said about one of the true masters of melodic craft. Wild stuff. Guess we’re having this conversation in the right thread!

I smoke weed now more than ever before and my antipathy for Tom Petty remains undimmed.

FWIW most of the canonical American mainstream radio rock guys of the 80s don't do much for me and that includes Brooce so yknow

    hmmm

If civilization, after all this time, has only progressed far enough for Linkin Park to be the greatest American rock band then maybe a nuclear holocaust wouldn't be such a bad thing after all.

If Tom Petty counts, then Bruce probably does too so I’d go with him.

If solo artists count then it is Elvis, or at least depending on what great means
