I also read a decent chunk and I’m really excited for the dub to come out. I might just restart the manhwa from the beginning because it’s been awhile and I did enjoy it

So some new anime I started and caught up on this week:

Ragna Crimson - interesting so far, but the first episode was the only one that really drew me in. I’ll keep following the season, but I’m definitely not enjoying as much as I thought I would after the premiere.

The Apothecary Diaries - this show is just wonderful. Might be my favorite new series after Frieren and it’s probably just as comforting to watch.

The Kingdoms of Ruin - this one keeps going places I’m not expecting and I’m enjoying the hell out of it. Some of the places it went already are pretty brutal (violence wise), so I can only imagine it’s going to get more fucked up as it goes on.

Delicious in Dungeon - this looks to be another comforting one to watch. Basically a cooking anime but with dungeon creatures as ingredients as they fight through the dungeon. Emily Rudd sounds great in her first dub VA role

Metallic Rouge - only the premiere is out so far and it was decent but didn’t really grab me yet. Might rewatch it though because I was a little distracted.

Not a new one for me obviously, but JJK dub ended this week. Such a great season and the animators deserve a ton of praise for the quality they put out under the conditions MAPPA put them through. I’m becoming kinda unhappy with the manga right now though so that sucks.

I also finally read all of MHA: Vigilantes this week and damn that was really good and they nailed the ending imo. I really hope it gets an anime after the main series is over.

TikTok is funny because people used ushers song daddy’s home or whatever to represent their love for gojo

it gets even funnier because Usher decides to say RIP to gojo and so many anime onlys are getting spoiled lol

I'm not anti-isekai, but the number of generic anime names I've seen lately is ridiculous, and it's absolutely true there are several anime that could have not been an isekai and it would have changed absolutely nothing.

I will say that I like the idea behind Cheat Skill In Another World, because even though it's peak anime trope city, the idea that the protagonist gets to go to both the other world and the real world whenever he wants is an interesting wrinkle that you really don't see explored elsewhere.

Not a fan of Isekai’s, and their absurd long names aren’t helping

What in particular turns you off about the genre?

I’m mostly just not into the medieval fantasy kind of anime to begin with (Frieren a rare exception because it’s so fucking good). But the “oops I got sucked into a video game and I’m also a new creature” doesn’t do much for me.

I’m also just shocked by how many there are.

To be fair, it's a genre that really does lend itself a lot of versatility, even if that versatility is usually restricted to "I got reborn as (insert thing here)". But there are a lot of examples that really do a lot with the concept.

Like, That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime sounds on the surface like it's just about a guy who is now a slime, but it's really underneath the surface about how a slime managed to take varying monster tribes that were previously at each other's throats and turn them into a thriving and peaceful society that forms positive relationships with other kingdoms to become a world power in their own right.

Then there's the psychological horror that is Re:Zero, or the genre deconstruction that is Konosuba. There's a lot of room to play around when your pool is so wide.

And then some are just fun. Reborn As A Vending Machine is amazing and I'll fight over this.

There are some solid isekai but the vast majority are just boring retreads

In Another World With My Smartphone is another one that I know is generic as fuck but I absolutely do not care. Yes, yes, it's stock isekai and harem genre tropes, but the girls in the show all collectively decide they're going to marry the protagonist with or without his input and form a small governing body called the Bride Conference. That's batshit, and I'm all about batshit.

A majority are dumb popcorn tv, but some are awesome series. Re:Zero and Slime are the two that stand out to me.

Just started the dub premiere of Solo Leveling. I probably fell off before the halfway point but I loved reading it and I’ve been really excited for this one to happen.

Has anybody been watching it? Thoughts?

Pretty great start. Cast is also great so far. Definitely can’t be mad having Christopher Sabat and Kent Williams (once again the narrator and a character) in the same show again.
