this is visually gorgeous, the story itself is quite beautiful, but man does this score go straight for the heart, even in such small parts.

Been listening to it a lot since seeing the movie for sure.

Also the Deutsche Grammaphone release last year Hisaishi did with the Royal Philharmonic, that lives on my phone permanently. "Bygone Days" on that is like the most beautiful thing I think I've ever heard.

I think we would’ve had them by now if Disney still had the license. GKIDS has done a few 4K releases so at least there’s a good chance they’ll release this one in 4K. Just sucks they’ll probably never do the whole catalog.

have you guys seen The Wind Rises? I generally think that is an underrated / underwatched Miyazaki film. It's truly beautiful, maybe his most "adult" film

The Wind Rises is near the bottom of his filmography imo. The few dream sequences are great, but pretty much everything else is a pretty plain biopic

Completely disagree. The animation and score for that both rule and the war scenes at the beginning are powerful and sobering, especially coming from an animator who rarely dabbles in that kind of realism. As a whole, it feels more like a farewell than this one, and it was originally meant to be. Both feel like an artist reflecting back on his work but The Wind Rises is such a gut-punch. Especially that ending, which made me weep like a baby lol

The wind rises is one of the few Miyazaki films I haven’t seen. I have the complete Miyazaki collection on Blu-ray, just haven’t watched a few of them yet.

I think the only I haven't seen is Castle of Cagliostro and then the ones he wrote for that are directed by others (Whisper of the Heart, From Up on Poppy Hill).

The Wind Rises is great. I love the dream scenes especially but I also think it’s one of the more interesting perspectives on WWII I’ve personally seen in a movie. I kinda wanna rewatch it actually because now that I think about it it would be interesting to do a back to back viewing with Oppenheimer.

Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies might be even more devastating and is explicitly about WW2. highly rec that if you haven't seen it. but it just might be one of the most difficult watches you'll ever experience

Yeah, I have to get on that, it’s one of the only Ghibli movies I still haven’t seen. I read Kazuo Ishiguro’s novella An Artist of the Floating World recently, and that also really reminded me of The Wind Rises too, more post-war Japan, but still similar threads

Grave of the Fireflies is good but I wouldn’t count it as a true Ghibli film because neither Miyazaki nor Hisaishi touched it. Goro Miyazaki films get a nepo pass

Sorry but what are you talking about lol Isao Takahata literally co-founded the studio. His films are absolutely Ghibli films. Miyazaki is just more prolific so people think of his films first.
