I used to say Fearless was my favorite but that's mainly because I think it's her most consistent release. Consistent in terms of just a bunch of good songs. A few standouts but nothing "bad".

Over time I've realized I go back to Red WAY more often. I go through two ways of listening to the album. One being just straight through and another is skipping a couple songs. Had she trimmed 3 songs (13!) it'd be her most consistent.

How many albums does she have, 5? She needs a break. I'd hate for her to burn out if she doesn't.

Red is definitely her best with the 1989 album a close second.

Some could perceive her silence as suppor. Sooo

  10. They could, yes. But she's never been political before and someone else wrote a very good analysis of why it's silly to expect her to start now. This article does a great job exploring why that is. Another person on Twitter put it brilliantly - "Taylor Swift's brand is singing about that ex boyfriend who stole your french fries and broke your heart, not politics."

And I have a whole diatribe I COULD go on about how infinitely messed up I find it when people put the onus of activism on women - yes, even privileged ones - when a man is being a misogynist. Unless she's out there actually supporting him, I expect to see people coming for male pop stars before they bother a single young woman.

    That's all.

Don't you think she has made explicit feminism a huge part of her brand? From dismissing Tina fey with the quote about "a special place in hell for women who don't support other women" to everything involving Katy or Kanye or Nicki? I don't expect someone like, idk, Rihanna or drake to take a stand because they've never made political or social orientations a part of their public image whereas people like Kanye Beyoncé or Taylor have.

I don't expect her to release a pro Hillary song or anything, but anything seems better than silence in this kind of environment.

  13. If you haven't, you should read the article. It addresses this. Her brand of "feminism" has always been centered on when issues personally impact her - it's part of her branding. It's centered on personal empowerment through achievement, not actual societal change. And I say that as someone who has been in love with the girl for the better part of 10 years.

I love her, but grandiose political statements outside of her direct world just have never been something she does. If anything, her form of activism beyond her branding has always been financial, not with issuing statements. It just doesn't make sense to expect one from her now. And frankly, given how badly so many people want to see her taken down, this is a no-win situation for her anyway.

Do I personally wish she'd speak up? Sure. I wish everyone would speak up. But I don't expect anything she says to influence the reality that women already know we experience on a day to day basis. I want more men to speak to other men.

And again, that's leaving my feelings about putting the onus of activism on the people being disenfranchised out of the conversation. Bc honestly that's never gonna be okay.

re first graph: i agree, i just always assumed someone in the swift machine would figure out that using it as a marketing strategy could complicate things when macro-issues raised their heads. the gawker article linked within yours has been something of a guiding beacon for me w/r/t understanding swift for a while.

i guess, for me at least, i still experience dissonance even understanding her taylor-centric public politics and feminism, because it feels so obvious that this kind of thing would happen and wind up making everyone aware of how self-oriented she is rather than only cynical knobs like me lol. just makes the marketing strategy seem kind of short sighted, i guess, which feels out of character or something. just hard to reconcile it for whatever reason, especially considering someone like katy perry openly working for the dnc and seemingly doing fine regardless.

also, i agree on the last part, generally speaking, though i think sometimes there could be an argument that shielding celebrities from these interrogations could ultimately be harmful. it's a weird dynamic for celebs with wealth and power imo, something i dont really have fully formed thoughts on.

i dont really know how much of this made sense.

anyway, thanks for answering. i was genuinely curious how you might approach it, since it is such a uniquely horrible situation this year lol.

It always gets sketch when mostly women are expected to come up with these responses. It's like when female celebs started being asked if they were feminists. At first I was getting all outraged about the "bad" or ignorant responses, taylor included lol, but when it became obvious that women were being targeted and it was this "gotcha" question it got real old. Especially when men do the least like all they need to do is not totally disrespect women and they get turned into a feminist dreamboat meme, whereas women are picked apart constantly when they're asked about it.

I guess I fall into the camp of I don't really mind that women are asked and people want accountability or people speaking up, especially celebs that have that influence. I don't necessarily think we should stop asking those questions or critiquing their responses to questions, but the way we ask them and the different lower standards for men is the problem for me. Men do the least all the time, so to see ppl like taylor and beyonce constantly getting picked apart, even tho I don't always agree with them either, while men get off with nothing is a lil irritating.

It happened with the kesha thing too. People criticized taylor for not speaking out before her donation was made public and I remember people reaming katy perry, but male popstars? I didn't see that same expectation.

Yeah I don't think it's the job of a popstar to be an activist, it's awesome when Miley or Demi use their platform but I see it as a nice bonus I guess
Can't say I've never been disappointed in Taylor for staying mum but I realize that is unfair

  17. so are we thinking this texas show is actually just a random regular one-off show and not an announcement for anything new or surprising?

I truly think it is, but wish it wasn't.

they probably are giving her an unthinkable amount of money to play it

Been listening to her discography a lot the past few days and can't believe how consistent it is. I'd say her last three albums all have potential to be her best, but gravitate more towards Speak Now/Red eras. I think she's gotten better at crafting cohesive albums with each effort, and hope she continues this trend.
