never would have listed to the latest maron based on not knowing the guest but it's honestly a vintage Maron performance

 

Wild episode. The Reddit thread is a nice companion piece, as fans are semi-split on who was more of an a-hole but ultimately land on Maron being more underhanded and dishonest about his role in it all and the guest appears in the comments to give more insight into what the atmosphere was like immediately after the blow up and the following day.

 

I haven't listened to WTF in a minute but might have to give this a listen

eh that was not my read on it. the guest reframing the convo in the coda too to marc flipping out suddenly out of nowhere when the guy went out of his way to ... conduct a post-interview with marc about marc's acting (?) and then being all woe is me about marc yelling at him was baffling lol

 

ultimately i think that marc was definitely being a bit of a jerk in the beginning but in ways we've seen him do with people he's known for decades that handle it a lot better and then a guest who wanted to complain about every grievance for multiple decades but then ultimately also be a dick in the end and try to act like he was being some saint afterwards

 

I think that’s a generous/gracious way of looking at it that shows a bit more empathy towards Marc’s POV. IMO, you can’t discount the dynamic of host vs guest and person with cache vs person without cache. Also, again IMO, my read is that Marc is a bit manipulative and knows what to say to sound “honest” and “self-reflective” while being neither.

My takeaway is that Matt’s needling and insulting of Marc was a barely-playful-yet-still-playful tit for Marc’s longtime off-mic asshole behavior tat and Marc blew up because he can’t take it. And I also think he knows how to execute a manipulative blow up to get control back and frame himself as more evolved and more honest and not the bully that he’s been.

Whichever way you land on it though, wild and fun ep.

 

yeah. i don't disagree with your framing of it that that's potentially how it was. i still think even with that matt's seemingly "wow where did this come from" act is either a) indicative of an extremely naive person with no self-awareness or b) calculated and weird
but yeah, incredible ep. first one in forever i've been compelled to listen to based on the reaction where i didn't already know the guest

 

I’m still listening but I can’t believe Marc isn’t the asshole here (in my opinion). I know a lot of guys like this dude and it drives me insane

 

Marc is always the asshole IMHO. And I haven't got up to this episode yet. But even on the Peter Saragaard episode he admitted to acting like he watched Maggie Gyllenhaal's movie and then she could tell that he hadn't watched it. But I feel like that a lot of his conversation he doesn't seem like he is that familiar with the guest and doesn't do any research.

 

i could not agree less lol, the reason that he mentioned it in the sarsgaard episode is because it's such a rarity that it happens. the maggie gyllenhaal episode he was referencing was from like two years prior lol.

 

I think coming into a podcast ready to call out your “friend”/host then acting completely baffled that he would call you out in turn is absurd. Dude had no trouble talking shit but couldn’t take any criticism back
