"This Christmas" by Luther Vandross and "Joy to the World" by Aretha are Top 5 all time Christmas songs for me.

 

how in trouble am i in if i say boygenius kinda sucks?.

im making my year end 2023 playlist (aka the one time of year i try and listen to every pop, rock, hip hop, alt song i missed) and ill admit i had no idea who boygenius was other than some hype and word of mouth. So I gave them a whirl.

Their album never grew on my like I had hoped, but "Afraid of Heights" from the EP is incredible (and basically a Lucy Dacus solo song).

You mean it's not meant to lull people into a false sense of security?

 

I recently saw some one call boygenius 'panera bread music' and I though that was spot on. Their album bores the life out of me and their fanbase weirds me out sometimes, especially the Phoebe fans.

 

Boygenius rules but the fans are a bit insane at times.

 

Phoebe Bridgers is a classic case of an artist who I like but don’t listen to often because a big portion of the fanbase annoys me. It’s unfortunately expanded to Baker and Dacus for me too.

 

yeah the comment section on their posts are all-time cringe levels

 

Having annoying fans is kind of a weird reason to not listen to an artist.

 

My take on the Boygenius album is that it has one really great song and is otherwise kind of blah. They are all more interesting (and make better songs) on their own, which is often how I feel about supergroups.

 

I haven't listened to the Boygenius album because this is exactly what I presumed it would be.

Which is the one great song?

 

I don't really get it, all very bland. Is the idea that the lyrics are supposed to be fantastic? Because the song structures and music are not

 

That’s part of it, yeah. I actually like 80% of the album but I get what you mean for sure. A song like “We’re In Love” has nice lyrics on paper but when I listen to it, it sounds like 5 minutes of absolutely nothing. And I’m a music first guy so good lyrics can’t save a song like that lol

 

Boygenius are no blink 182 that’s for sure

 

my take on it is that Phoebe fucking sucks for staying silent on the Marshall Vore allegations

 

the julien-led songs on the boygenius record are incredible and the opposite of boring and remind me of pedro the lion and rilo kiley at the same time. “not strong enough” is also good. rest of the album… ok

 

If you don’t think true blue or satanist are good then you are bad and dumb.

 

If they're not for you I get it that's fine, it is a bit annoying how much bummer music there is now post Billie
