Super late to this and this wouldn’t make the gimmick good at all but what if they started this gimmick because Big E is getting cleared soon? Again, wouldn’t make the gimmick any less dumb or good, still very tasteless, but would at least have one or two brain molecules go “oh ok I guess I kind of get it” if it’s done because Big E comes back and gets “revenge” on him for almost costing him his life/career.

If this was the case, I'd actually call it a brilliant work...both because it gives Ridge genuinely massive heat (and pays off that Ilja work), and it gives Big E a catalyst to go on as a singles guy, versus returning as the 3rd member of a trio in a random match.
