This would be more substantial discussion than that thread ever gets

 

It's pretty much right in line with the other good close range players. That's good. It's not historically high or absurd or anything.

 

And how much are those other close range players doing it per game

certainly not 12. Him doing it more makes it a more impressive number

 

A QB who throws deep all the time is going to have a lower efficiency rate with it than someone who only does it once in awhile. But the one doing it more is probably still a lot better at it. Efficiency isn’t that meaningful by itself without factoring in how much the defense is expecting it and trying to stop it.

 

It's an incredibly high percentage shot. Those other players do it less often because they can shoot from beyond 5ft too. Like Zion is shooting 36% from 5-9 feet and 27% from 10-14. Of course guys that can hit it from most anywhere aren't driving to the rim every play.

But then consider that a contested shot is a contested shot regardless whether it’s one guy or 5 guys trying to contest it, even though the latter is obviously more difficult

is there a stat that illustrates how often he draws more than one man / more than two men when he drives?

 

Like, any NBA slasher should be able to beat ONE guy that often hah

It’s historic, absurd volume. I already admitted that raw efficiency was not the right way to express my point. That was wrong. But I’m also pointing out the not-so-subtle flaw in using “contested shots” to measure double and triple teams

 

It’s not exactly splitting hairs. My main point is he is still converting 66% despite a lot of double and triple teams. I can’t prove that but contested shot rate doesn’t necessarily disprove it either because of that flaw. So I asked if you have a more granular stat. If there isn’t one then that’s fine and I’ll accept that the existing numbers don’t back up my point.

 

I'm not using it to measure double or triple teams I'm using it to measure contested shots. He's not converting 66% on those double teams - i dont have that number - but he's converting 53% on contested shots. If he was ever healthy it'd be easier to judge because i'd have more data. He wasn't top 20 in double team rate last season or top 12 in 2020.
