after reading the thread (jesus fucking christ shoot me), this didn’t happen. at all. i still agree with a lot of your points about bikers but it was you saying something shitty happened to you, people being like damn that sucks, you saying you do some dumb stuff while on a bike for no reason, people saying that’s dumb, and you saying that people in here either, uhh, drive drunk a lot or are arguing something that no one did. and then continued to say people were arguing against you when not a single person was making that argument.

this happens a lot. you don’t have to invent people just to make your point. your initial point was fine. why does it have to be more than that. why does it always have to be this way

the whole point of the red light is cars are moving too fast and don't have enough visibility to see what's coming. A bike has much more visibility and ability to stop and isn't moving that fast in the first place. Traffic lights were never designed with bicycles in mind. I get that that is the only legal solution we have right now, now that infrastructure is the way it is.

But in reality it's making bike travel very slow and inefficient and also much more exhausting. Every time you stop you have to build momentum and dig your weight out of stationary inertia with your own legs again, it's not just like hitting a brake and gas pedal. Shit like this is the reason why people don't bike, because bikes aren't designed to keep starting and stopping like that, they're designed to preserve momentum whenever possible.

It's easy to sit there and say "if you can't tolerate that, then don't bike", but that's why we have a 2% bike rate in a global crisis. So the forward thinking thing to do is, find ways to capitalize on the advantages bikes have over cars in congested areas, and that's where I'm challenging if applying ALL traffic laws to bikes is really necessary. If it's a four way stop in a hilly neighborhood and a bike is coming down a big hill, why can't the vehicle just be expected to wait 4 seconds and yield to the more vulnerable commuter? They can't just press the gas harder to get up that hill from a standstill.

Let alone, it's not enforceable, people are gonna fuckin do it anyway, are we gonna adapt to how people actually get from place to place or not?

also the “i never do this, i am always right in this scenario, so your hypothetical doesn’t apply to me” argument you keep trotting out … you have to realize how conceited and dumb this sounds, right?

if anyone in here was like “i’m actually a perfect driver, i obey the rules of the road 100% of the time, it’s everyone else that sucks” they would rightfully be getting dragged over it. just stop. come on lol.

i took offense to "it's the cyclists that suck" cause its taking an already dangerous mode of transportation that some people rely on when they can't drive, and then blaming them for the danger instead of blaming stroad infrastructure that is hostile to bikes no matter WHAT they do, even if they do follow all the laws. Sure maybe originally it wasn't them saying "That was probably your fault Randall", but am I wrong for feeling the same kind of defensiveness when that's all people have to say about bikes, when i talk about how I just got hit and cars disregard me whether im following the rules or not? Just shit talking cyclists and saying they're the ones endangering themselves? Yeah it wasn't "about me" but it did still hit a hard nerve. My genuine response is like "nah fuck that you should consider their perspective more" and that's when i got ganged up on. If that's me doing it to myself, fuck it, i genuinely believe 95% of Americans should change their views on this for a better tomorrow.

as joe showed by quoting the actual posts, no one was “ganging up on you” instead you started writing fiction about what everyone else was saying.

like i said, i mostly agree with the points you made. im not trying to gang up on you. as per usual when this happens seemingly twice a week, its the way you go about saying it and then pretend people are saying things they aren’t and start being an asshole about it. it doesn’t have to be like this

it's not fiction. I literally quoted the posts that were calling me out over this.

There were more but i'm not gonna quote every single one.

you quoted them and either a) deliberately misconstrued what they said to apply it to some additional point or b) have extremely poor reading comprehension

People were pointing out that it's ALSO cyclists that can be a problem, and in a lot of areas, they are very much a problem and put other people in danger. No one was saying YOU do it. Most people in this thread and AGGRESSIVE senses of humor, no one here actually wants harm to come to people on bikes. Our general point, was no one pays attention 100% of the time all of the time. Shit happens, people miss things, etc. and we're just pointing out that running a red on the bike is a dangerous risk to take. Just because you feel that you're paying attention doesn't mean you always are to the nth degree, and it doesn't mean you can't miss a car coming.

No one pushed back on your argument about laws, either. Yes, there could OBVIOUSLY be better laws that better protect both bikers AND drivers sharing a space. Nobody disputed that. But you yourself have driven high, and you can't say you always pay attention when you admit to driving high. How do we know you're not biking high, how do we know you think you're good but maybe you're not? That's all we're saying. The rules do go both ways, and it's disingenuous to complain about drivers not being safe, when you are doing things that objectively aren't safe, even if you think you are.

For the record, driving high or drunk, regardless of what you think you're "tolerance" is, is wrong. If you take anything that impairs your reflexes, you shouldn't drive. And just because people here drink, doesn't mean that they're also driving drunk, or above the legal limit. People do metabolize things differently.

No one said it was your fault about high people were driving around you. But you don't have to take offense to people thinking that bikers also are a huge issue at times. Neither group is complicit on the roads and no one was saying they are.
