then why are you saying what you're saying

knowing that you yourself, in comparison, did not have to struggle with ANY of that when you didn't have a car and now that you're in school

I’m not taking the hipsters ride bikes thing. I’m saying folks who are poor are more likely to either drive their own car, walk, or take public transit.

Even the article you shared showed a 2% biking rate compared to a 10% walking rate. Showing that folks would rather walk than bike somewhere.

Data here shows a 71% of working poor folks using a personal vehicle to get to work. Poverty Level Workers Use Cars in Commuting More than Others | Newgeography.com.

Sure this probably stems from how our concrete ecosystems are built to make car driving the ideal transportation method, but it’s not because people can’t afford cars and buy a bike instead. Not sure that’s a narrative here at all.

    Depends on the sport.

    Football? Yes.
    Baseball? Yes.
    Hockey? Yes.
    SOCCER? Yes.

This is a good counterpoint, and it raises the next logical argument which I'm also advocating for - how much would that change if we actually changed our laws and infrastructure to accomodate bikes, instead of treating them just like "slower, way more dangerous cars"? Because in a lot of urban Europe for example it's the other way around. The wealthier folks are the ones driving cars and having more than one family car, all the proletariat including the middle class makes a habit of biking and enjoys the financial repreive of not having to have a state sanctioned, expensive maintenance, $30,000+ vehicle to get around. I'd argue our lower class doesn't because it's not that effective of a solution in most places.

I literally moved to specific cities that would be easy to ride a bike around, just so i could afford to live without a car. So I guess my situation is pretty niche compared to others'.

For the record, these are a few examples of the posts that made me feel attacked / ganged up on and the nuances of the discussion being ignored to turn it into questioning the morality of my behavior on the road. I'm not just making that up and gaslighting people.

There genuinely wasn't a good faith effort to respond to the distinction im making, it was just "that's illegal you suck and bikers who do that deserve whatever happens" and I honestly thought the thread would be better than that about a topic that should be more nuanced and disputed.

and I know this one was said in jest, but, that's why I started throwing in the global warming shit after I was already salty about the discussion. So I'll own up to that, that's my fault, should've taken grimace's joke as a joke. It just came off really strong like "i'm joking but I'm really not, *insert car-centric opinion here*" and that's what led me to like, Americans shouldn't look at it that way, the rest of the world doesn't.

from a legal standpoint yeah. Any argument challenging the status quo is gonna be "legally incorrect". But in context, with a person exercising careful judgment, there isn't any real reason why bikes and pedestrians jaywalking inner-city when there's no traffic should be dangerous, and if anyone gets written a ticket for that it's really just money for the state.

Obviously if the bike cuts a car off that clearly had the right of way, THEN write the ticket and blame the cyclist.

no, from an actual safety standpoint. you should not run red lights, i dont care how "jealous" you think cars are. non-cars should not be running reds either
