But you can't discount someone for saying having that extra maneuverability and visibility means you get to run the red light, which I think might be some people's point.

Favorite thing is when a driver does something blatantly their fault but act like it's all the other drivers fault. Love it.

 

I just think that’s people mistaking it’s a “safety issue” versus the jealousy of “dammit why do I have to stop and they don’t”

bikes are just better for getting through heavy traffic quickly, at some point that’s just true

I think the point that people are trying to make Randall is that bikes are expected to be treated the same as motor vehicles, whether you agree or disagree is a separate matter. So running red lights on a bike is technically illegal and it’s hypocritical to try and take some moral higher ground stance

This is really my whole take. I get that bikes are legally classified as vehicles but that's wrong. Legal arguments =/= moral arguments. They are augmented pedestrians. When they are ON the road cars should exercise care. But if you wouldn't expect a skateboarder to get off his skateboard and stand at an intersection for 90 seconds when there's no traffic coming, I don't get why you'd expect that of a bike

another one of my takes is, bikes should 100% be allowed on the sidewalk and the flimsy "research" suggesting they shouldn't is a tiny sample size from 30 years ago that has never been replicated by another study. There wouldn't even be this much tension between cars and bikes if cyclists could use the sidewalk like scooters and skateboards

 

Skateboarders use the sidewalk. Bikes do not.

 

tbf a bike running a red on a dead city street is pretty tame? not really much different from a car rolling a turn at a stop/red or a pedestrian jaywalking imo.

We don’t need to do a whataboutism with cars. Yes, drivers do a lot of illegal shit too. It’s the taking moral higher ground stance of being a cyclist and the “drivers need to stop being dicks to us” that’s the issue when you’re admitting to not obeying traffic laws

 

this isn't the only time ever an American law was based on faulty logic.

 

My only contribution is that motorcycles suck. Cars and bikes unite against motorcycles.

my argument about cars being courteous around bikes isn't a legal argument at all, its literally just "dont cut it close to hitting someone who is far more vulnerable than you are"

the legal argument of bikes being treated exactly like vehicles and having all the same road laws, is strictly a legal argument that has nothing to do with morality, and it doesn't actually make any sense because a bike is much closer to a pedestrian than a car.

 

i mean i can literally cite my sources and point out the flaws in the research studies on this topic but I'm sure no one wants me to go that far
