Entertainment itself is a lower form. It is art that doesnt aspire to challenge its audience, show the truth about the world, convey ideas using its medium in meaningful and interesting ways. It has lower aspirations; to simply entertain, hold attention, profit, comfort, mass appeal.

 

Tremors 3 is a gem

 

Everyone in here lumping "comic book movies" into one genre when talking about modern superhero movies, like comic books are not medium with a gigantic variety of different genres and styles.

Yeah true I guess. All the good creator owned comic book stuff gets adapted for TV. For example 20th is currently working on new adaptation of Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentleman, but it is going straight to Hulu.

 

Ideally there should be space for both, "entertainment" movies and "art" movies, but yeah, one's definitely taking up a little too much over the other. I can acknowledge the negative effects evil corporations like Disney and WBD have on the industry and still enjoy their superhero movies when they get it right.

We keep having this fight and I'm sick of it

 

Also one day there will be a superhero movie that's legitimately just a fantastic movie with a great, moving story and it will get snubbed because it will get written off as "just a superhero movie".

I think there's a lot to be said for making a movie that's purely entertaining and good at being entertaining. So many movies try and fail at being interesting and engaging.

If a movie is great people will say it is great. If you broaden the term superhero, like Foster did with The Matrix, there already have been some.

The studios figured out how to make consuming a form of activism. They actively amplify racist and sexist responses to new films so that it is imperative that you support the thing, regardless of actual quality.

 

I feel like that's one of the only exceptions and it's partly because it's animated

 

I really really hate that we have started referring to the act of engaging with art as "media consumption"

 

This is why I always prefer physical media

 

this is why I sail the mighty seas for anything I want to keep. I’ll never pay for digital content. I do pay for some subs though, but getting closer to cutting a few off for their prices hikes *cough* Netflix.
