The problem is HD games are much more expensive to make than 3DS games. So I personally still expect plenty of games that are handheld focused that look more like 3DS games than PS4 games, similiar to how the Vita has plenty of games that don't make use of it's power, especially from Japanese developers. Handhelds are, next to mobile, their bread and butter, and development costs are part of that equation. Western developers will be on board if the customers base is attractive enough, as they were with the Wii and DS. Don't expect a lot of ports past launch though, given the existence of the PS4Pro and Project Scorpio. If anything, we'll get exclsuives or heavily modified versions (again, much like the Wii). There will be some games that release on all three systems I guess, mainly Japanese games that don't need all much horsepower (games in the realm of Persona 5 that would run on a PS3).

Nintendo games will look as high end as possible, as always. An exception could be Pokemon, I don't see them going the HD route just yet.

Fair enough. I definitely don't have a great understanding of it so this cleared a lot of it up for me haha

Honestly, the Switch is giving me flashbacks to the Wii U. I don't see this being hugely more popular than that. And that trailer was wayyyy too reminiscent of the first PS Vita commercials.

The WiiU wasn't as useful as the Switch. Also, it largely tanked due to bad branding. Consoles don't have to be smart to sell, they just have to be marketed well. Play Station has ben proving that since the PS1.

I would bet money on this being a lot more successful than the Wii U.

    Just a friendly reminder

I am actually really excited to have a Switch, whereas I bought a Wii U as a kind of impulse decisions (which i don't regret). Gimme a gorgeous HD Fire Emblem now.

Fire Emblem is another series I could see not making the jump early. The sales numbers make it a very profitable handheld game, turning it into a console-like experience with HD graphics would probably be too expensive compared to it's potential sales.

Fire Emblem has already been a console experience before.

Given that was way back in 2005, I'm not as worried, plus IS has always been a Nintendo developer so I'm sure they're already working something out. And lastly, IS really has no other option: 3DS is gonna cycle out soon, and developing for Switch is the most reasonable next step after that.

Also they just released a Wii U game this month. But I agree it would probably take a while, but I feel only because Fates just released this year.

    Advance Wars switch then!!!!

The GCN and the Wii weren't HD consoles though. I'm not saying FE won't be on the Switch. It will be, probably just not in the way you might expect.

Many of these Japanese leaning games have been on consoles up until the first HD consoles, where they started becoming largely handheld focused series (many JRPG series, Harvest Moon, Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter and many more). The reason for this is that HD games are expensive to develop. Many of these games are still very successful, but in most cases only because they keep development costs low by being handheld games (or, in some cases, simple, upresed ports of handhelds games - like some games that go from Vita to PS4, or from 3DS to WiiU). Also, Japanese players want handheld games, not console games, but that's another story. Fire Emblem is definitely in that category, as are many other, newer series we have seen do well on the 3DS (and the Vita), like Bravely Default or Yo Kai Watch. Dragon Quest is another known example: there is a reason why Dragon Quest 11 also gets a 3DS version, and why Dragon Quest 9 was a 3DS game, even though the PS3 was still huge in Japan. There is also a reason why most Vita games do not look like the Vita Uncharted and Killzone games, but more like 3DS games. I could go on.

Pokemon is a handheld series that would likely still be profitable even if it looked like Skyrim, but much less so. Also, although there is a vocal minority, most prospective Pokemon buyers are perfectly fine with how Pokemon looks. Same goes for Fire Emblem and maybe even Monster Hunter by the way. Maybe "better" looking versions of these games would lead to increased sales, but the chances are very low that the sales would increase enough to make the games more profitable.

So yes, most of these series will at some point, some soon, some after one or two years, make the jump to Switch, but many of them won't start looking like Breath Of The Wild or Final Fantasy 15 because of it. Chances are many of them will look slightly better than they did on the Vita or 3DS, making them primarily handheld experiences, even though the Switch allows you to play them on the TV. Nintendo games are more likely to become full on HD games, because Nintendo has the money, but then again they also want their games to make money.

P.S. Everything I have said until now was based on facts we know. There is also still the persistent and credible rumor that the Switch has a touchscreen (even after the video), essentialy meaning that although all games that are playable on the TV will be playable on the handheld screen, that won't always be the case the other way around, for example when a games makes a lot of use of the touchscreen. A workaround would be essentially turning the handheld into a WiiU Gamepad, but that conflicts with what Nintendo has been saying about what is in the dock (that it is only for charging and the HDMI cable). This of course could be wrong, which is why I am not including it in my argumentation above.

@TheLuckyMoose haha yeah not gonna quote that. But definitely a good post. Enjoying the conversation.

Will it really cost that much more to make games into HD? I'm thinking maybe they can do it similarly to Disgaea's art style (not FE specifically, but the JRPGs). Or like you said, make it a game that can be play docked or as a handheld, but with a notice at the start that it is best experienced on a handheld screen (hit or miss for me).

Either way I'm really really excited.

I'm hoping for something from the Tales series. The first one I played was for GameCube so it would be awesome for it to come back to Nintendo

new sidescrolling castlevania would be awesome but it seems konami isnt really interested in doing that. the guy behind castlevania, koji igarashi, is no longer at konami. luckily he funded a new game through kickstarter so maybe that'll end up on the switch somehow.

Persona 5 on here would be great, one of my favorite parts of P4G was having it on the go

edit: also I'm really interested to hear more about the battery size/duration of the handheld portion. if they could match or beat the n3DSXL that would be impressive

@zigbigwig It's A LOT more expensive. I'm not talking HD in the way Monster Hunter Tri is HD on WiiU compared to the 3DS version (as in high res), I mean like making Fire Emblem look like Final Fantasy 15. That's most likely way too expensive for that franchise and for many others like it.

And yeah good discussion. I'm not trying to be an asshole, I know most people don't know about this stuff (and frankly for good reasons haha).

no one's expecting a Fire Emblem game to look like FFXV, haha. I'm expecting a new one to look a hell of a lot better than the 3DS games though.

Yeah, at least half the people that I know personally that are 3DS owners have New Leaf. Very charming time waster, although after 150 hours I have no desire touch it again.

Animal Crossing became a big franchise with New Leaf. Again, the handheld factor played a part in that.
