I’m also an either/or on the David/dave front. I was always David but then in middle school my friends started calling me Dave and now it’s just a whatever you want. I never really gave it any thought but I am now realizing I will introduce myself as either David or Dave, and there’s no rhyme or reason as to which one I say and when lol

 

All physical labor. I used to think being a server was cake when I was younger, nowadays my body aches often and I fully feel how many times I balanced 40+ pounds worth of plates and glasses and every one of the 10k - 20k steps I get in at work daily

 

Time to put your degree to use !

 

It’s easy to think of being a server as very low level labor because all you’re doing is going and getting stuff and putting it somewhere else, and sometimes that “stuff” is just like. Two drinks or one ramekin of ketchup. but in that amount of service volume and with the amount of cleaning they expect you to do, it actually very much is like working at a UPS or similar physically. Sure the shifts are shorter but most service workers need two jobs to be stable and have savings for the slow months anyway.

 

Worked at a Walgreens DC for almost two years and it was the unhealthiest two years of my entire life, just from physical pain and also always getting sick. Had strep 4 times and the flu twice in less than a year lol

 

Not an actual server but working at Sonic fucked my back UP lol the constant moving/bending and getting shit from the freezer is so bad for you, especially at the speed we were expected to move at

I feel the pressure now more than ever to actually stop being complacent and do something else - I pulled or strained something in my foot, I think it’s my Achilles tendon. It didn’t happen suddenly, just kept getting worse over the last 3 weeks and especially after I worked three 12 hour doubles right before my thanksgiving trip.

And man… it is a scary feeling, having a tight budget and trying to pick up shifts to save money, but then your foot gets progressively more fucked up and now I kinda have to take the next couple days off work to rest my foot and get new shoes

 

It didn’t help that the reason I went to New Orleans for thanksgiving is to have a DANCE PARTY to honor my grandma (she didn’t want a funeral)

I took it easier than I normally would but even the little bit of dancing I did with my cousins and aunts/uncles etc definitely hurt later

To be honest, I kinda skimmed past the mexican food discussion. My tum tum still hurts from Panda Express and I didnt want to think about food.

I hope so becasue right now it feels like the express is gonna be barfed up.

 

You wanna talk insanely high paying trade jobs, I learned in New Orleans that Mississippi River boat pilots start at $120k and make up to $600k (!!!!) when they’re tenured. It’s a crazy nepotistic industry, obviously everyone wants that money but people only get in if their whole family has done it for generations.

They basically extort the shit out of every company that wants to ship something up the river, just to have a guy who excels at navigating it and can avoid a huge shipping vessel getting beached in the shallow / swampy parts of the Delta (or colliding with another boat cause that shipping channel is BUSY). They have incredible union leverage because there’s only like 3 companies total that do it and a couple hundred boat pilots that are good enough to be in charge of billion dollar shipments.

everyone else in the shipping industry hates it, like tugboat captains make more like $80k-$100k to do far more work and be away from their families for longer periods of time
