I am watching this CNN docuseries about the history of US presidential elections on Max.


I'm on the episode on the 1912 Wilson vs Taft vs Roosevelt vs Debs 4 way election. Very interesting how they outright say in this that Progressivism from it's very inception was about trying to quell socialism by co-opting it's language while offering reform liberalism. They said Teddy was drawn to Progressivism because he was so afraid of Socialism and Eugene Debs.

 

Just showed that one to my students the day before Thanksgiving break.

They kinda pointed it out but Teddy wasn’t just co-opting the language, what he was proposing by then was more or less just Debs’ ideas but just not calling them socialism lol. But yeah our politicians back then, even the conservative ones, were way ahead of the curve on todays in terms of basically wanting a social democracy at the time

 

Dang Teddy no selling getting shot in the chest and then finishing his speech. I have heard that story but honestly I thought it was an urban myth or something

 

They’re still caught up on the “can I say the n word if it’ll save a billion white people” thing

 

Also I watched the 1964 LBJ vs Goldwater episode. Kind mindblowing hearing that former Goldwater staffer saying LBJ had the CIA spy on their campaign and bug their offices. Makes so much sense now why they did why the Republicans did what they did 12 years later. I have heard Nixon say "the rat bastards have been doing the same bullshit to us for years!" before, but didn't know the details. Republicans always be doing the shady shit they accuse the Dems of doing but do it worse.

 

On 1976 Carter vs Ford. Lmao all these Ford staffers mad at the SNL Chevy impression. "He was the most athletic president we have ever had! He wasnt a clutz! We all trip sometimes!"

Maybe it’s a placebo effect but the few times I’ve had liquid death water it was quite refreshing

I also like Liquid Death, but Spindrift water is unreal. It tastes so clean and the flavors are spot on.
