Hating a song and being a banger are not mutually exclusive!

 

Eh, I’m totally on board with him being an antivax asshole piece of shit, but those Anti-semitic think pieces were written up before the song was even released based on the title alone. The “they” in the song is pointing more towards a conspiracy that the mainstream media is trying to suppress information (and in his case, I’d assume trying to push a COVID narrative) than anything related to Jewish people.

The song off “Magic Time” is even less problematic, just an example of him using biblical imagery to depict Judas selling out Christ.

 

I think it's easier to dismiss these instances individually than collectively. I'm definitely getting a where there is smoke there is fire vibe from him, to a point where I'd be very surprised if he wasn't Anti-semitic.

 

I mean I don't think he's really worth defending anymore. I don't pay attention to anything he does, but that's because I think he's an old rich dude phoning in bad music and complaining about COVID. With that being said, he's had a common through-line in most of his music post 1980 where everyone is out to get him. The industry, the government, other singers who are stealing his music. He is such a psycho that saying something like "They control the media" can match up directly with the ambiguous "them" that is doing every other bad thing to him. Subtlety is not his strong suit in 2023. If he wanted to write an antisemitic song, I don't think he'd be pulling punches in the lyrics or being vague. I genuinely believe he is referencing "they" as a general "they", not as a dogwhistle. If he comes out with more problematic shit, I also wouldn't be too surprised. Part of being a Van Morrison fan is trying to understand how such a sad, pathetic shithead could write some of the most beautiful, transcendent music ever recorded.

Not necessarily related (but related to the song I picked), I do think that the record from which the "Facebook" song and the "Media" song came from are an attempt at him to troll his record label, something that he also did way back in 1967 with the Contractual Obligation Recordings. He has a song on there that I was going to pick instead.

 

I also don't know how to vote on this. If I'm picking a song that I genuinely like, "The Middle" would get all of the points. If I'm picking the worst of the worst, "The Middle" would get 0 points.

 

Whoops didn't see that convo earlier. I decided to go how much I liked the band vs. how much the song sucked, so Green Day ran away with it. God damn that was bad

 

Both the Van Morrison and Green Day songs are two of the worst things I have ever listened to

Also I am shocked there is no Weezer on this playlist. It's low-hanging fruit, but I feel like this category could have resulted in an all-Weezer playlist.

I don’t think there’s any Weezer songs I truly hate though. Like they’re Weezer, they have a bajillion songs and at least 25% are bad, but they’re supposed to be bad because that’s just what Weezer does.

 

They’ve got like 14 albums I’ve never heard, I bet there’s something I’d hate in there somewhere
