When you only teach the most whitewashed pro American history in this country are we really surprised that younger people are using the internet to figure out how much bullshit that was filled with.

The two things in most recent times that come to mind for me are the Blowback podcast and The Watchmen episode on the Tulsa massacre. I was too young to fully understand the bullshit that we were fed and filled the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. I don't think I was ever taught in school about the Tulsa massacre so I had to go back and learn more about that myself.

Even the current book about Cuba that I am reading has made me really re-evaluate everything that I thought I knew there as well. From pretty much the start of this country we have been fucking over and fucking up Cuba.

Yep. I don’t think we need to be skirting environmental review laws for EV production. But I do think there should be reforms made when it comes to green public infrastructure like building transmission lines or rail. Those things are going to make a bigger dent in our climate goals than just manufacturing and selling more EVs.

I haven’t watched the tik tok videos but I think there is value in understanding more why this terrorist group in the Middle East that most people never heard of targeted america, and the role that Israel plays in American imperialism. So many people think the 9/11 attack was an attack on the US because we are a free country and they hate freedom, as dumb as that sounds!

Yep. Although the rigor of environmental reviews for most green infrastructure probably don’t need reform because it wouldn’t be that rigorous. Want to build our green energy infrastructure? Invest in it everywhere! I was involved in a conversation with a Biden admin official and the military budget was brought up, and the reasoning given for the military budget not only so easily being passed but so easily growing is that military touches everywhere, particularly in employment. I think there is some criticism of this response when it comes to the military but do that reasoning with green energy infrastructure! Dump a ton of money into and build it everywhere! For the love of god stop giving money out for fossil fuels

Definitely think it’s important for people, a lot more people, to learn why a lot of US problems/threats (i.e, terrorism, immigration, etc) is the country’s own evil doing.

Learning it from the Bin Laden letter (which is going to have some bias and white washing itself) is probably not the best place to do so lol

Not the letter alone, no, which is the unfortunate byproduct of the age we live in, TikTok, and people’s general inability to research and not believe the first thing they are told or come across. Hopefully some dig deeper, though.

I’m cautious to overly celebrate TikTok. Partly because most “person talking to camera” videos on the platform annoy me, lol, but mostly because it has just as much propaganda danger as Facebook, Reddit, and any other online platform at that level. The Johnny Depp/Amber Heard shit there was rough.

It does unequivocally rule that social media has exposed young people to the truth on matters like Gaza, though. TikTok, Twitter (even in its current state), etc., versus Fox News & the NYT is a lot of why young people are in some cases a lot better educated. (And, in addition to squashing access to information on queerness, it’s why initiatives like KOSA are so nefarious.)

I think about this a lot because I remember being a teenage evangelical in the 00s learning how worthless the rhetoric I was handed on evolution was. And walking a jagged path through 9/11 truther bullshit into better political perspectives (which is why I’m sympathetic to kids wrestling with something like that letter). And mourning in my 30s not having tools to understand queerness until my 20s.

There are so many reasons to be pessimistic as fuck, lol. But, I’m really holding onto hope that the connectivity of these messy tools can lead to better things.
