In the year 2023 I realized Zach Bryan makes great music

Not sure if this is a bad opinion but the best TBS line up was the Louder Now era with Fred.

good opinion actually because that line up made their best album (WYWTB)

I don't think I've ever posted in here, but the recent Zach Bryan posts have made me want to say this:

I cannot take any music with the country twang vocal style seriously. It always sounds pandering to me no matter how sincere the lyrics might attempt to be. Happy for everyone who likes it, but I don't think it will ever work for me.

He definitely sounds country to me but I think that's literally just his accent. Doesn't bother me at all, he sounds great.

Can it be pandering if the guy is from a town of like a thousand people in northeastern Oklahoma

Wow, we might have a new worst post in this thread. Woof. Glad I changed the title all those years ago!

I mean, not liking it is one thing, but how exactly is it pandering if he actually has a “twang” because is he from a certain region? It’s not like he’s Iggy Azalea lol

He also doesn't have a twang, he just has an Oaklahoma accent, two very different things. His voice is gruff and dirty and raw, no twang at all

  15. Are there country singers that use the vocal affectation without it actually being a part of their speaking accent? Because I can kind of understand the issue in that case. Though I’m not sure if that’s what the poster was specifically referring to and I certainly don’t have any examples myself

yeah a ton of pop country artist do for sure. I forget who but one of the male country stars is from like Minnesota and sings with the fakest country accent.

I mean, it definitely happens (that some people fake it), but the vast majority of those artists just…have accents? It’s insane and honestly offensive to put a blanket “this is pandering” judgment on anyone who sings with a “country” accent.

yeah, that's why it's my bad opinion in the bad opinion thread.

Maybe I'll come around someday, I didn't discover that I actually love the Beatles until I was 30, so there is some hope my horizons will continue to broaden.

Not to pile on here, but there's a difference between a bad opinion and an offensive opinion.

In one scenario, you just don't like something, which is fine, but in the other, you're insulting an entire group of people, unintentionally or not.

Like, if you just said you don't like the accent or don't like when people fake the accent, no one would have an issue with that.

They didn't say it is pandering, they said it's hard for them to get past that it sounds like pandering to them, so they struggle to get past the accent regardless of whether it's pandering or not

  25. Penlab

Okay? So the next logical question is "why does it sound to them like pandering"? If it's a person's natural accent, then there's nothing pandering about it.

At best it's just a bad way to put things. We don't have to bend over backwards to avoid correcting someone when they put something badly.
