To add my personal slant to this -

I’m happy we are winning, a W is a W and we are in a really good spot right now. It does make sense on some levels to reserve Trevor’s most lethal talents for key third/fourth downs so that defenses aren’t ready, and it does make sense to feature Etienne considering he’s on fire.

I just also think there’s something to be said about getting passers into a rhythm with some consistency. You can’t do this with ANY QB, there’s a threshold for how good they have to be - Trevor is there. I think Trevor elevates his game when he gets into the “mindset” of challenging the defense downfield, we have seen him do it in a lot of games where we were FORCED to be pass-first and he often rises to the occasion. So I’m wondering why we even bother being conservative and keeping games close in the first place. Using our #1 overall pick QB to win games with high flying offense should be a choice, not only done out of necessity.

A couple times we have jumped out to an early lead and then coasted after the first quarter and let the other team back in the game. Why not win the game by the end of the third quarter and avoid all that unnecessary drama, by keeping the pressure on if they can’t stop Trevor’s passing? Why not force teams to play scared and drop guys deeper into coverage, which would then open up the field a lot more for Etienne to rip off huge runs in open space?

This season is only gonna get tougher, and it’s hard to feel confident when it feels like we’re barely escaping some of these games. I don’t want to win ugly on purpose just because we have a good RB and defense, I want to be aggressive and at least try to win convincingly. It was a tough stretch of road games, and they were trying to protect Trev’s knee vs NO and PIT for sure - but I need to at least see us call downfield passes more confidently when we are playing at home.

With all of this said, I’ll change my mind and be stoked on Press Taylor if he actually does that the second half of the season + playoffs. Because that would mean they were slow-releasing their playbook and saving the best pass plays for later so that teams wouldn’t have too much film on what we do best in the playoff stretch. And that’s a brilliant idea.

But if we keep doin what we’re doin, I’m very worried about being a paper tiger. It would be amazing if our pass defense could keep this impeccable play up, but sooner or later we’re gonna face a playoff QB who is hot and we aren’t gonna be able to rely on that. That’s the playoff game we might lose if we weren’t aggressive about putting up our own points from the beginning. And it’ll be the same shit as the last two times we played KC.

 

Anyway that’s my bye week analysis / my mid season review of where Trevor is at in year 3. He is becoming very reliable at his current role of getting the ball out quick and playing game manager, but coming through for a few big plays when it counts - however, the training wheels feel like they’re still on. He still has so much untapped potential as a lethal medium to deep passer waiting to be released, and I wanna see Doug P’s staff unleash it. He is ready for that level of responsibility.

So glad I have tomorrow off (only time I'll thank the troops for something). been a long and shitty week regarding doctor visits. Sadly have one more tomorrow and then it's over (hopefully).
