I’m confused. I see only 59 songs, not the nearly 200 you were challenged to rank

    The rivalry is back on

Cath at 30/37 and Feeling This at 46/59 are upsetting placements to me

@CarpetElf some of your rankings are agreeable, but Cath and New Year both ELEVEN SPOTS BELOW DEATH OF AN INTERIOR DECORATOR and NINE SPOTS BELOW SOMEDAY YOU WILL BE LOVED is terrorism

Interior decorator and someday you will be loved are two of the most throwaway songs death cab wrote in their otherwise ultra-consistent peak, meanwhile Cath and TNY are objectively top 10 dqm

either Motion City already did a better version or they one-upped their version but TNY is nothing special at all

I literally prefer “she will be loved” by maroon 5 to “someday you will be loved” by DCFC and that’s saying a LOT

At least the m5 song has that distinctive held-out falsetto melody in the hook, that Death cab song is the most derivative waltz I’ve ever heard and the band should’ve put a B side on the record instead or skipped it totally

ruins the otherwise perfect and exact flow of Plans. Same with interior decorator and Transatlanticism. that album is better as a 10 song album with Passenger Seat straight into We Looked Like Giants. Flows perfectly without that kitschy ass song in between

The New Year is an excellent song that is very Death Cab specific in its style and structure.

It has endearing, playfully sardonic, and relatable existential lyrics about when you reach that age holidays lose their magic and you realize how arbitrary it all is, but you kinda wish you didn’t and you still believed in the magic. The dissociating imagery of clinking glasses sounding like explosions in the distance, 30 dialogues bleeding into one, etc really puts you in the mood and scenery of being at that New Year’s party that you’re actually kinda sad and lonely at. The wistful inner child inside the cynical middle aged man is a common theme in DCFC lyrics and that comes across strong in this one.

The chords are simple, but the leads on top are creative and span several octaves to find just the right notes. The drums aren’t that technical, but the kick drum and snare have an interesting, patient, offbeat cadence in the verses before going into an addictive bounce in the chorus/bridge. The fade-in drum fill that leads back into the hook at the end, where he hesitates at the hi hat for two rests before going into the toms, gets me EVERY time, such a tasteful detail.

the guitar tone is elite throughout the song and the walls of sound are a perfect introduction to the grainy yet lush and atmospheric, analog, mid-fi sound of one of my favorite DIY production jobs of all time. don’t forget that beautiful ambient drone in the beginning that fades in perfectly, and then reappears in the last song - wonderful touch for album flow.

it hits hard but doesn’t take itself too seriously. It is a perfect song and it is a sound patented by Death Cab. I’m not sure how you’re hearing it but I would not trade ears with you!

The musical presentation, though, is why I love this particular take on that narrative

you thinking the song is cliche lyrically makes sense but I don’t know how in the blue hell you think that musically. I can’t name another song that feels like TNY instrumentation wise. I mean it’s 4-4 indie rock, but a very fresh take on it

I really like how Cath… finds the perfect balance between having one of the most musically interesting guitar melodies they’ve written but still fits really well in the pop structure/alt radio friendly single
