Prepare yourselves for disappointment, because bands we love will be chomping at the bit to play a show with them.

Yeah, she announced that album a while back and I found it pretty weird to see Miley and Kid Rock on the same album....

  4. I don't expect a 77 year old to have the most nuanced take on or understanding of cancel culture, but working with Kid Rock in 2023 stinks. She's been a relatively solid advocate for the LGBTQ+ community in the past, hasn't she?

Nah. I think it’s important to bring up that Dolly is working with Kid Rock/her thoughts on that. Dolly is someone who has been an LGBTQ+ advocate both in the past and even the present (see this from yesterday: https://people.com/dolly-parton-says-she-loves-and-does-not-judge-the-lgbtq-community-8386722) so working with someone who has spewed homophobic slurs and is a transphobe is a slap in the face to all of her LGBTQ+ fans.

and that’s just the LGBTQ+ part, Kid Rock has been a terrible person to many women and others, is an overall horrible person, and anyone working with and/or defending him in any way should be called out or their comments scrutinized.

Yeah I mean she's a 70+ year old red neck with an outrageous amount of money, I dunno why you expected anything differently

Because she’s been an ally to the LGBTQ+ community for years and has been, as far as I know, pretty unproblematic in her career?

you can be an ally to LGBTQ+ and still have complicated other politics. it doesnt all have to be so black and white. i don't think dolly is an enormous piece of shit for doing a duet with kid rock.

dolly has a pretty pristine reputation as far as i know..working with kid rock is obviously a bummer but to twice disregard her longstanding history as an ally and write her off as a "rich redneck" who no one should be surprised to see working with kid rock is pretty strange behavior.

ever since the collab was announced, i've kind of seen it as her trying to bridge some sort of sociopolitical gap (in line with her comments about approaching the duet from a place of "love"). is it a wise or effective decision in that regard. no. i don't think Kid Rock's fans are suddenly gonna find themselves listening to more Dolly Parton or vice versa, nor do i think it'll ease any preexisting tensions between opposing groups.

i think the majority of us LGBTQ+ people who thought she was a proponent of queer and trans rights wouldn't expect her to try to platform someone like Kid Rock, so it is sad to see her do so. like i get her logic, but i don't agree with her decision to collaborate with him.

  13. i don’t think assigning malice to Dolly in this really makes sense at all if you know anything about her. her support and activism has absolutely been genuine and passionate. doesn’t mean this wasn’t a very poor and misguided decision

I didn't assign malice, I'm just saying maybe be more cynical towards celebrities/rich folks even if they claim to support what you believe in is all

i will say, having gone back and looked at the comments she made on the situation, it's definitely not a good idea to lump LGBTQ+ people in the same sentences as drunks and drug addicts. it's the same bullshit that Evangelicals use to equate being queer or trans to some sort of societal ill or malicious predisposition like criminal activity.

She also worked with Lizzo and Nikki Sixx on the album, so I don't think her people did a very good job vetting

i don't know a ton about Nikki Sixx's history, but i remember the tracklist was announced several months before the Lizzo allegations dropped.

Dolly gets a pass from me. She’s done such great things (vaccine funding, childrens literacy, LGBTQ rights) for worthy causes.

It’s an album cut that no one is going to even listen to, it is what it is. There’s too many other draining things going on.
