KC will not let Pat sneak at all since he dislocated his kneecap 4 years ago. they do dumb bullshit with like, Blake Bell doing sneaks. It sucks and I hate it

I’ll also add that I think this says lot about Tomlin. Dude is a good coach. There’s a reason the Steelers have never had a losing seasons

that’s one way of looking at it for sure. I’m looking at it from the perspective of, a defensive team’s whole intentional philosophy is to keep games close and to take advantage of that one or two splash plays that gives them the momentum in the end

When an offensive team that can easily score 40 wins by one TD or less, that’s like “whew, closer than I expected”. When a defensive team that wins most of its games scoring 20 points or less wins by one score, that was the plan the whole time

I’d be interested to see if the Chiefs rank as one of the most successful/efficient teams on 1st or 2nd down with 7+ yards to go

I honestly think it’s their chosen philosophy cause if it wasn’t then they would be a lot more serious about getting a QB in the first place

Steelers historically have ALWAYS been that team except for those couple years that Ben actually was throwing for 5000 yards

I don't know if there's any public/free way for me to see that but I'd assume it's better than average

Seems like a bad plan, if you ask me. I’m a fan of simply scoring as many points as possible so that you can outscore your opponent

I do see your point though. I’m sure that’s what Tomlin preaches too

Is investing a first round pick in Pickett not being serious about getting a QB? They took a shot and he hasn’t been good. I’m sure they’ll try again in two or three years

I think letting a 24 year old, mediocre QB with subpar physical abilities, fall to you in the second half of the first round, in the worst QB draft class since 2013, is a lazy effort to replace a HOF, two SB ring QB

Maybe if they took a Pickett type while Ben was still decent and let him learn from the bench that would be a proactive move, but they already did that with Mason Rudolph and he sucks. Doing it *again* after Ben retires and expecting that to be a solution is where im critical of their efforts. They should accept the reality that a good QB usually costs more than they’re comfortable spending and they can’t just stall until they get lucky

Sure, but what other option did they have last year? They obviously weren’t going to tank. Drafting Pickett was probably the most inspiring option available to them. Trading for Russ, Ryan, Wentz, and especially Watson clearly weren’t the moves to make.

I don’t think they were in a good spot and they took a shot on a first round rookie QB. I think it’s okay that they took that shot. Much preferable than trading for the aforementioned guys and I’m pretty sure there wasn’t a free agent starting-caliber QB worth mentioning (there rarely ever is).

If anything, criticize them for not drafting a legit succession plan behind Ben before 2022 or moving on from Ben sooner. I don’t blame them for taking a shot on Pickett hoping he would be good, whatever those odds were

this is really where I’m coming from but also , if they can trade up for a better QB this year they should. Just sucks to see otherwise good teams not swing for the fences to fill the most important position

Hell, Jalen Hurts said last year that he thought the Steelers were going to draft him. They took Chase Claypool a few picks ahead of him. Maybe they should have gone with Hurts!

But a lot of people didn’t think Hurts was going to be good and look how that turned out, which is why I don’t blame them for taking a shot on Pickett.

I’d be surprised if the Steelers made a move for a QB in 2024 though. I think they’d give Pickett next year to prove if he can be the guy or not, then make a move in 2025 if need be.

the difference to me is, Hurts in round 2 is medium risk high reward. Pickett in the 20s when he probably should’ve fell to round 2, is medium risk low reward. Hurts very much had a high ceiling if he got his flaws in check, whereas Pickett’s ceiling is at best medium and that’s if he’s EXTREMELY good at processing and pocket awareness.

It’s like how nobody faults the Bears for taking Fields. No one should be surprised he struggles to read defenses and get rid of the ball, that’s been the criticism the whole time, but the potential is off the charts if a coach can actually teach him that stuff so it’s worth a shot

whereas the Patriots were clearly taking a mid-at-best QB in Mac Jones

Howell? The guy who's gotten sacked like 98 times this year?
