If Tomlin’s whole tenure was him choking in the playoffs I’d move on this year, but he’s shown he can get it done.

I think he’s earned some patience and leeway, on two conditions: 1) make it clear to him that Canada’s getting fired either way with or without him 2) put some pressure on the fact that the QB position since Ben has been unacceptably poor so far, and we already know he can coach the rest of the team but that part has gotta improve no matter what

 

Has Tomlin had any playoff wins with a QB not named Roethlisberger?

It's probably hard to attract a good oc when your QB is pickett so then you gotta take a flyer on an unproven person or a guy that's been around the league on ten different teams

QB purgatory is a really shitty place to be. The real problem is they sat on Ben too long after he had declined, and had to continue to pay him too much money after he retired. So they’ve been very cheap about QB so far.

the reason I am still giving Tomlin a shot is because it still hasn’t actually felt like they’ve even seriously tried to get a QB yet lol. Kenny Pickett was the only QB prospect even really worth a look in that draft class and still no one else wanted to touch him with a ten foot pole in round 1, so the Steelers lazily chose him cause he’s from Pittsburgh. Other than that, what, they drafted Mason fuckin Rudolph lmao. Signed Mitch fuckin Trubisky lmao. what are they even doing? This is bigger than Tomlin.

If they actually go get a QB, which is 48% of what you need to win anything important, and they still underperform them I’m more ready to blame Tomlin.

But the Steelers as a franchise have always been overly conservative about shit like that to a fault. They are way too “trust the process” and not enough “every year is different context and requires different decisions.” I mean look how many years Bill Cowher WASNT in the playoffs at all and was having losing seasons with mf Tommy Maddox and Kordell Stewart and whoever the fuck. No one denies that Cowher was a great coach, but at some point the team can’t be scared to make a splash. They’re pretty good at getting weapons so it’s not like they can’t evaluate talent, they just don’t even be trying that hard to get a QB. Hard to really blame the coach
