I recognize this is a hard conversation to have but we all just have to collectively realize ticket demand for the top 1% of artists is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than it was 10-15 years ago due to the adoption of streaming. These events will continue to be in higher demand and thus cost more.

seeing bad bunny and blink for like $600 at Coachella and getting good spots for both of them is a steal now

It’s not even just the top 1%, it’s even artists that were mid tier indie artists before. Like Muna, Caroline Polachek, boygenius, Phoebe, Faye Webster, The Beths, Alex G, Weyes Blood, Mitski, they’re all selling out fast and more expensive due to streaming and also TikTok.

$1000 for a floor seat at standard pricing should be illegal

Yeah, first Slam Dunk announcement in awhile that didn't move me. We'll see what else they get.

As for concerts/prices, this sounds dumb because live music has been around forever but doesn't it feel like the masses just now figured out how good it feels to experience music live? Probably purely anecdotal

Yeah though those acts are still relatively accessible (save for Phoebe Bridges) price-wise. I guess it depends on what everyone's breaking point is but the days of going to theater shows for $35 are long over.

Nah, I get it. But that doesn't mean I don't find it strange that people are willing to pay those prices (although I do find the payment plans with interest to be predatory).

It's less about what the artists are charging and more about what people are willing to spend that's upsetting to me. But that's a broader societal discussion and one where I'd wind up using the word "post-monoculture" a lot.

Hah! This lines up perfectly with a short trip to Europe that we've got planned for next May... But there's no way I can convince Jackie to attend based on the line-up. Not that it's bad just... Not for us.

A lot of it has to do with social media. There's elements of the whole thing that I feel super cynical about but it's done really cool things for hardcore and ska specifically, I think! People who might not otherwise get exposed to it are seeing clips of shows on-line, realizing it seems like a lot of fun... And checking out the bands, going to the shows, etc. It's really awesome and makes the whole thing feel just a bit more inclusive.

You can feel the difference at some of the more recent ska shows I've been to in a really positive way.

Agreed, it does encourage some financial irresponsibility given that these things used to be much more accessible. My guess is it'll go around a generation and kids in 2045 will realize their parents went into some sort of debt buying premium concert tickets and not put the same value on the experiences.

I feel like social media has helped so much. Please don't attack me after saying this lol but Myspace ended up better than PureVolume for our scene, and now Tiktok is showing how cool shows are. Huge artists down to house shows, shit goes viral & gets people interested.

That would've been WILD to see eachother in fucking Europe haha

Probably. And, TBH, it wouldn't all bother me as much if the artists didn't have an air of "gosh, I just love all my li'l BFF fans so so so so so much you all are the besssst now gimme half a month's rent sorry for the fees we'll do better next time when I tour again in 5 years LOL JK" about it... And people just accept it all without a blink or critical thought.

Like, you can skip out on a stadium show. It's fine and doesn't make you any less of a fan.

Is Klarna really any different than putting it on a credit card and paying the minimum? Idk it isn’t the artists’ fault that so many people are financially illiterate

I've used Klarna plenty of times but I've never been charged any interest. It splits the cost into 4 equal payments that is due every 2 weeks. I had no idea you can finance them up to a year with a lot of interest.

No, it's more of a product of American culture in general. I do, somewhat, take issue with the fact that North America essentially subsidizes the rest of the global touring market thus our prices are even higher.

I wanted to do payment plans for Golden Voice’s Camp Flog Gnaw but it was done through Klarna so that spooked me away and I ended up deciding not to use it.

then golden voice announced Coachella pre-sale with payment plan option and that wasn’t done through Klarna at all so of course I did it.

I wonder if all artists have to sign UK exclusivity on this. I would love to see Bouncing Souls and Pennywise but the cost and effort involved in going to this (leaving my partner with our baby for 2 days) outweighs this. Fingers crossed there will be a few adjacent gigs in Scotland at the time
