If it wasn't for Blink you wouldn't have created an online community where we can all gather and share our common love of music and everything across the board.

    So cheers to you Jason!

I wonder if there was a conscious decision in sequencing this similarly to Dude Ranch with more Tom on the A side and more mark on the b

Absolutely love so much about this Jason and you touched on so many things I can relate to throughout.

My brother was always my gateway into alternative music. Being from the UK somehow he always had his finger on the pulse - When he found Green Day I was listening to Meat Loaf and Brian Adams. When that Green Day influence leaked down to me my Bro had found the Skate Punk/Fat Wreck/Epitaph bands and I will never forget the day on the way back from Church him telling me there was a band about to blow up called Blink 182 that I would like.. The next week I was in my local music store and the first single release of What's My Age Again? was out in the new releases - the single costed £3 and I had £5 pocket money.. I wasn't sure I wanted to part with most of my pocket money on something I wasn't sure I would like so put the single back down... As I went to leave the store over the Store radio they announced the new single from Blink 182 and played WMAA and I immediately went back and bought the single (which I think had a b-side of a live version of Josie - Tom Delonge says something about seeing Christina Applegate and her checking out his ass haha). About a week later I snuck in to see American Pie at the cinema under sage and they had the soundtrack playing over the speakers once again with an introduction saying the song was Mutt by Blink 182 and it excited me so much.. I got Enema Of The State in Xmas 99' and it blew my world apart - it wasn't until I got American Pie on VHS 6 months later I realised I'd seen the band in the film! - I saw Blink 182 in 2000 in London and it was my first live show - Fenix TX Supported which opened the door to the world of Drive-Thru Records for me...

Urethra Chronicles is released and my parents say i'm not allowed it as it had Parental Advisory on the front.. I bought it anyway but had to hide it in the back of my first ever practice amp for a good few years!

Finishing my last school exam in 2001 and a school friend taking at least 5 friends money and cycling three miles and back to another store he worked in to pick up TOYPAJ on release day and us all crashing a party so we could all gather round the stereo to hear for the first time together is a moment i'll never forget - I think it was possibly the first time any of us got drunk too!...

2003 release day of self titled another instance of a group of us all going to the record store together to buy it - so many shared experiences happened with this band and with people I mostly still speak to and see regularly is something to cherish and memories we'll always have together...

Finally just wanted to say that I have a close friend who has lost his way a bit right now, a friendship I hold dearly and we aren't currently on talking terms.. Watching the interview with Zane Low and Tom saying how he went on a journey during the break ups and he was trying to figure out who he was still but has come full circle now and realises what's important to him now gives me so much hope that me and my friend can reconnect again even if it's not for another 10 years.

God bless Blink 182 - Fell In Love is the only skipper for me on this - Anthem Part 3 and Turpentine early faves.

Thanks for reading my essay if you got to the end, I blame Jason Tate ;)

Great record. Great review. I came in after the Enema hype, so late to the party. But they became a huge part of my life. So glad to have them back and have this record. Keep it coming!

Finally getting to this. Great review Jason, you really encapsulated how meaningful this band is to so many of us. My older cousin Jason is the one who completely changed my life and musical outlook by showing me the self titled record as a kid. I Miss You and Here's Your Letter specifically spoke to me at the time. And now another Jason is really speaking to me and bringing back so many great memories by sharing his own personal experiences.

Your use of dates felt very "Dr. Manhattan" to me. Loved it.:-p

I like to picture “Tate” as a shrieking nervous system when he listened to the album the first time.

  11. Was finally able to give this a read this morning and, god damn, what a read. Thanks for writing this. Absolutepunk/Chorus are the reason I am into this type of music, and being able to share a moment like this with everyone, and read feelings I felt listening to the album, really hit hard. Nice work.

This is unquestionably the best album review/reflection I've ever read on this site or anywhere. Profound. Thank you, Jason.

Finally got a chance to read through this personal-essay-with-a-side-of-review and really appreciated it.

In spite of not growing up with blink-182 or having the relationship to their work you do, I still feel a version of that history in this new album. And, in this piece. The whole thing feels to me how it feels to talk with a friend I made in adulthood about our respective lives. It’s a window into other people’s lives that lets me appreciate who they are all the more, and also to compare, contrast, and generally reflect on my own experiences.

(It also reminds me that I should stop being a loser and take some time soon to write about my relationship to some personally important albums. And also comics.)

something something music mends broken hearts etc etc

  14. Yes, yes you should. Highly recommend it. I'd rather read those kinda things than almost anything out there passing as a "review" these days.

When I talk about criticism, I'm like, just get personal with it.

Finally got to your essay over here, Jason, and it is really good, exactly what I love about the music community and I did get a bit teary as well

Predictably, Pitchfork gave this album a mid-level score...Do they even like music?

Don't you understand that they committed the greatest sin an artist could possibly commit!? They drew from and referenced their past work in their newest work!!! Everyone knows any artist worth their salt needs to wipe the slate completely clean with every new work.

Plus, they had the audacity to address similar concepts - growing older, losing and getting back in touch, their own mortality - in multiple songs! What were they trying to do, create a cohesive album around a particular theme?

    Buncha losers.

I saw this too. Almost came to make this comment. I like Pitchfork and use their reviews for discovery. To a point. And other times I like what I like and don’t give two shits what they say. This is one of those times!
