Finally saw this last night, the writing was lazy and the editing was a mess but I still couldn't help but enjoy it. The last hour of the movie was a lot of fun. :batman: :superman:

I really tried to like this and go into it with and open mind, but it was just bad. Such a shame.

I'm very in the middle about this, because I'm a huge Batman apologist but it had too many glaring flaws (the Martha connection, why can't Superman hear the bomb in the wheelchair, Batman using guns, etc.) for me to really enjoy it. I'll definitely check it out again when it drops on DVD though. I also thought the JL stuff was very forced in, no need to do all of that in one movie, they could've even moved it to a post-credit scene and it would have been stronger.

Really wanted to like it, and enjoyed Affleck as Batman, but holy smokes it was a mess. I feel like I could've skipped the first half of the movie and not have missed anything. It seemed like they had a bunch of random scenarios that they thought would be cool to see on screen from the comic books and then tried to figure out how to wrap a story around it. And trying to shoehorn Justice League elements and characters in it just to set up that movie felt really forced. Marvel spent years building up to the Avenger's with various movies etc and this felt like them trying to rush and catch up to that point and just felt really unnecessary to the movie.

Oof, hopefully it helps though, the thought of every joke in the movie being in that trailer isn't great

DC has yet to prove why I should not have low expectations for every one of their films. They have proven they are worth seeing, at least once. But yea...

Why does Suicide Squad need more humor? I don't want a Marvel blueprint slapped on it.

There's a difference between what Marvel does with stuff like Guardians and actually having something semi light-hearted and not a melodrama fest like MOS and BVS have been so far.

Reshoots happen. They're common. This is likely in response to Deadpool more than BvS reception, I wouldn't worry about WB trying to fit Suicide Squad in with what makes Marvel movies so successful, it's still got David Ayer behind it.

In other news, BvS unlikely to hit $1 billion. WB will absolutely want Justice League to do a lot better than this, so again I wouldn't be shocked if they pulled Snyder.

I didn't think the jokes in the SS trailer were funny to begin with. And I don't know a ton about David Ayer so I never had a ton of hope for this movie.

Nolan's Trilogy was a drama and didn't have many jokes and people loved it. Why can't DC movies keep going down that path? I enjoy MoS and BvS not being as cartoony as Marvel's stuff.

What Nolan did very well in his Dark Knight trilogy was make the movies fun to watch. The Dark Knight is a very fun movie. Nolan's action is imbibed with dramatic stakes, it's all in service of the statement each film is making or the character growth happening onscreen. There's humor at points, but it's not overbearing. The films can have darker elements, but, and in the Dark Knight especially, it is consistently fun and engaging. Snyder's action looks great, but it doesn't hit the same way because rarely does it feel like there's any consequence. Zod and Superman go back and forth and back and forth, two unstoppable beings just hitting each other. It looks great, but there was little investment on an emotional or artistic level. Same goes for Batman v. Superman's action. Even there, all powered up in his suit, Batman is about equal with Superman and the two just trade blows. And then they trade blows with another unstoppable being. The action doesn't quite convey anything meaningful or interesting, and the film around it certainly isn't fun. I don't like the Marvel vs. DC binary, I don't have a particularly strong allegiance to either side, both sides have solid cinematic entries and not so solid cinematic entries, but what Marvel has done right so far that DC hasn't is, they've given their characters time to build relationships. They made the Avengers about characters interacting for the first time, conflicting and then getting along and then in the next films they're having more adventures together and then conflicting again. DC went straight from Superman's introduction to Batman hating Superman to Superman fucking dying. It's just so baffling to me. We should want to see Batman and Superman hanging out. They should have a fun rapport and we should be excited that they're going to meet Wonder Woman and Aquaman and the Flash and Cyborg. Instead, Batman and Superman spent all of two minutes screentime, if that, getting along before Superman dies and then Batman and Wonder Woman share some somber dialogue in the closing moments of the movie and now we're going into a Justice League movie where it'd make sense to be invested in Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman as friends, but instead, Superman is dead, we barely know Wonder Woman, and we don't at all know the other heroes we're going to meet. I mean, it's not beyond working, but it's just such a strange route towards building investment in a cinematic universe to me.

I agree with all of this

  17. My feelings exactly.

I wonder where the idea came from that the audience wanted to see DC's equivalent to The Avengers to have a shot at success. Is there market research supporting that or it's literally a bunch of execs in a meeting room?

Did they think rushing into a cinematic universe and superhero ensemble was the only way to draw in the crowds? Like had they released a couple Batman solo films and another Superman one it would've all flopped?

I agree with what you said, but that really wasn't what I was getting at. Snyder's execution was bad. I'm not denying that. I'm just saying after the reviews, Suicide Squad is adding in more humor and it seems like it's trying to get away from the darkness they were aiming for and lighten things up like Marvel does. I brought up Nolan's Batman to show that fans don't need it to be lightened up, they just need it to be good.

The universe doesn't need more humor, it just needs to be presented better. I really enjoyed BvS, but the criticism is valid, though not as heavily as the critics are implying. I'm hoping that they got the jumbled mess out of the way with BvS, and the standalone films with bode better. Still doesn't change the fact that Snyder has some serious story/narrative issues.

  20. I hate that there's a chance Suicide Squad was good and didn't need those re-shoots to make it "extra light and funny" due to this misleading idea that BvS wasn't well received because it was missing jokes and humor.

The word is that the somewhat light-hearted/funny tone of the trailer, which was SUPER well received, is not at all what the movie is like. If the movie is "dark and serious" in the way MoS and BvS are (i.e., lifeless and devoid of any emotion) then maybe reshoots are a good thing?

Started watching Under The Red Hood. Is there another thread for these types of movies?

  23. I don't think we made a DC Animated thread yet. Could be a good one. I like those a lot.

I just tried my hand at one! Between the Killing Joke announcement & BvS, I've been combing through all the animated stuff & it's really incredible the amount of quality releases there's been.
