Anberlin have shared on Instagram that the band is entering a new era. Stephen will no longer tour with the band and Matty Mullins will be the new live frontman. Recorded music, mentioned in the comments, looks like it may be a hybrid of both singers.

Interested to see what direction this takes. I love Mattie’s vocals so I’m stoked for that. Would love some new higher energy and more aggressive anberlin!

Can’t picture how that would work… I could hear it for the newer songs but anything older

also thought that about skiba and delonge

Matty Mullins was a surprising choice to me! Would’ve maybe thought Aaron Marsh, just to go from one incredibly unique voice to another.

Very interesting. Are there other bands that have done this before? Touring instrumentals, sure, but touring vocals is a different story.

Scary Kids Scaring Kids most notably (not of the same caliber). New record featured a different vocalist for every song and they toured with the former lead singer of Saosin.

This sudden change after the comeback is unfortunate. Matty will do great, but this is not the Anberlin fans wanted back... I would welcome re-recorded versions of Anberlin essentials though! Just for the same of an actual formal new timeline.

    Agreed. That's quite solid.

Anberlin is Stephen. Will definitely be strange, though I haven't really enjoyed anything from them in like a decade.

Odd to do this right after reuniting...

Their band and their art and all, just seems like a really strange thing to do...

I think, while this is a little peculiar, that this is not dissimilar to bands who have studio musicians track on albums and different people on stage playing the parts. This will essentially be that... Stephen on the records, Matty live. Unique for a vocal situation but I get it.

To each their own but I don’t hear anything in those videos that excites me about him taking over. Like it’s serviceable but it doesn’t sound like Anberlin. No disrespect meant to the band, I know they’re huge parts of what makes them work. But with Matty on vocals it just sounds like what it is: someone else performing Anberlin karaoke. I’d have no interest in going to a show and hearing him instead of Stephen. Just a bizarre move, in my eyes.

I want to like this, maybe it’s just me, but I get such a karaoke vibe. Probably would sound great in a studio setting. I don’t know shit.

I get a similar vibe sometimes seeing the actual lead singers try and perform their own heavily-produced studio stuff though.

It's always tough singing someone else's beloved songs. If you take your own spin on it, you'll upset the old fans. Try to sound too much like the original, and it comes across as karaoke. Similar to Cody on Real Friends singing their old tracks. He sounds nothing like Dan, but he's at least got good energy and the band seems to be having fun. And the new stuff is tailored to his voice, not trying to be Dan Lite.

I do get the sentiment though. I get that this is Stephen's band first and foremost, but it seems like having him write and Matty sing is the smarter way for the band to proceed.

I hear you but I guess to me it is better to have this version than nothing at all. To each their own I guess.

Stephen mentioned that "LP8" is coming for Anberlin. We'll see what sounds like, hopefully, next year!
