Blaming Cousins for that MIN / KC loss was overly harsh, I just watched the game

Kirk had a Jags vs Texans amount of dropped passes. Hockenson is a huge disappointment and Jefferson had a bad game and then a hamstring injury. Mattison also had a sure TD on a screen pass right before the Sneed no-call. I hated how O'Connell managed timeouts as well. At the very least that game shoulda been 27-27 going down to the wire.

I also hated that no-call on Sneed. I wouldn't say KC gets "bailed out", that was just one isolated bad call that jobbed the Vikings. Uncatchable or not the CB shouldn't be allowed to keep pushing the WR the whole route, Addison probably couldn't get inside to where Kirk threw it.

Mahomes receivers suck this year but Isaiah Pacheco is the best RB they've had since Kareem Hunt. I love his high motor and his extra effort running, he is a slasher that has a lot more power and acceleration than you'd think (but also demonstrates patience on some runs). I think we're gonna keep seeing less inflated stats from Mahomes as the Chiefs rebrand into more of a running team that isn't asking Mahomes to throw 50 times a game.

Oh, and Kelce actually was erroneously left open on his touchdown this time. Not because of the playcall, but because Bynum got confused. It was definitely his responsibility to clamp down on Kelce and not follow a slant route to where Metellus already was guarding - but that's why teams call plays out of "bunch" formations to begin with, to create confusion as the DBs don't have enough time to communicate who guards who in which situation. It's a good call from Reid in the red zone that teams should gameplan for.

Just rewatched ARI / CIN as well. Man, the Cardinals totally lost control of a very winnable game.

Part of it was Dobbs trying to do too much, like trying to throw deep to a third string RB on a scramble instead of taking easier yards that were available on a shorter pass in the red zone.

But damn was @Dinkleberg right about Jonathan Gannon.
1) Way too much soft ass zone coverage, and
2) he doesn't do a good enough job teaching his safeties how to carry crossing routes.

The former is how Burrow was able to march up and down the field easily and have a bounce back game despite not being as mobile, cause all he had to do was throw quick between holes in the zone that were almost never designed to "match" receivers or disguise coverages.

And the latter is how ALL THREE Ja'Marr Chase TDs got given up, Burrow was looking defenders off while Chase was crossing from CB zone to safety zone and they kept fuckin falling for it. That 60 yard post was entirely a blown coverage, they had one single high safety in Cover 3 and they shaded him to Chase's side instead of staying hard center. Chase flew right the fuck by him on a post and he was 50 yards down field before the other corner realized he fucked up playing too close to the LOS.

Not doing anything about Chase's 5-yard ins and outs and bubble screens is one thing - but when you have much less space in the red zone and much more defenders in the area, y'all HAVE to do a way better job making sure he's bracketed if he's running over the middle. It's like they didn't respect the speed of arguably the most lethal speed threat in the league. Gannon designs great blitzes and gets a ton of sack production, but that's all a moot point if his defense can't make zone adjustments to stop speed downfield or in short yardage, because that's exactly what a QB is going to do against a blitz.

Also the designed Dobbs off-tackle run on 4th & 1 was the stupidest thing I've seen. Dobbs is NOT fast. How you gonna roll him out to the outside and give him 0 checkdown or RPO options. You deserve that L Gannon, the tush push is in your playbook and it worked already earlier in the game, stop getting cute

 

I watched most of this game and this is spot on. The only tape on Burrow this year shows he can’t throw it downfield due to his injury and they decide to play soft coverage??!! The whole game was short throw to Chase and he picks up 9-12 yards after the catch. I watched the Kelce podcast with Gronk and they were talking about how some DC’s don’t adjust their defenses game to game and they just feast in those games. It’s wild that there’s only so many jobs and these guys get jobs and can’t do the the simplest adjustment that literally anyone who’s paid attention to Bengals would try.

 

But also the cardinals might be tanking so it could make sense
