I don’t know if you understand how big Coheed is… their fan base is easily one of the most dedicated.

  2. 20k feels like a lot for coheed unless it was some crazy special event. Looking at their most recent tour, they were doing venues with ~4000 capacity

Yeah exactly. If they were to a big event like that, I’m sure fans would travel for it

I thought the Sphere was residency-only, meaning someone like Coheed would have to fill it for 20+ days. Ain't no way they could pull that off. One concert, absolutely. Dance Gavin Dance could probably pull that off too, their fanbase is rabid and they have all kinds of lore to pull imagery from.

Coheed and DGD are not filling an 18k venue

This, neither are really massive bands. Last time both were in my city (Chicago) Coheed played a 2,500 capacity venue and DGD a 3,800 and neither sold out. I don't think dates on their other tour stops sold out either. If enough people are not traveling in their own cities to see these bands live what makes people think they will travel to Vegas to see them? I guess the Sphere would be a special experience, but it just seems unlikely.

DGD’s Swanfest just came to the 14k Mann center in Philly. I know it’s different because it’s a festival, but I think the uniqueness of the sphere might equal that. Granted, it probably didn’t sell out. They have sold out the 2.5k venues in Philly with multiple days of shows.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m no DGD stan after the Tilian thing, I just think they could do it for one show only, which wouldn’t happen anyway.

  8. A relevant comp for Coheed as far as destination shows for dedicated fans is the S.S. Neverender cruises that they've done. I think those sold well, but also at a much smaller capacity than the sphere. As much as I agree that a super visual, story-based Coheed show would rule, I don't think they're filling the Sphere any time soon.

I read an article with U2's production designer and he mentioned it took 2 years to build the current show, granted he said a lot of that was due to them building a show for a venue that was yet to be completed. However, he said every 5 secs of screen usage required 2hrs of rendering, which sounds quite intensive.

James Dolan (owner of MSG) already said the venue won't be used for one-off shows because they want artists to build a show for the Sphere, not to bring an existing show into the Sphere. Now that U2 built their show, hopefully artists can use that as a blueprint and cut down on the production costs/time.

Realistically, you need an act that can fill the venue 20-25x over the course of a run, that's about 450,000 tickets to move. There's not a ton of artists that have that type of pull, but also have the desire to put on a production of this magnitude.

This is the largest residency venue in Vegas by a lot, Adele is only pulling like 5-6K a night and I believe she’s in the second largest residency spot.

Personally, I’d love to see Gilmour/Waters swallow their pride and do a Floyd residency in there, but that’s def not happening.

I was there (to see Saosin). Felt like there were no more than 3-4k people there.

I think it was at the Skyline Stage which I think is like 6-7k cap? I could be wrong.
The seated amphitheater at the Mann is 14k.

I sold merch for Mustard Service in NYC last week & had like 50 kids in line right when doors opened, & I'd never heard it so quiet before a show in my life. I said something to the effect of "Damn you're all really quiet everybody good?!" and a kid replied "uhhhhh yeah we're all just really high". I think marijuana being legal/decriminalized/something law enforcement don't enforce has had a pretty noticeable impact, as well as the addition of NA options like Liquid Death or Athletic or other NA beers. Different genres & markets have such different vibes too. I live in North Jersey, & if I plan on drinking heavily at a show for whatever reason, it's kinda wild but it's definitely cheaper for me to take a train to/from Philly & slam $4 PBRs all night than to go 5 miles away & be sad every time I buy a $15 PBR in Manhattan

Totally get that viewpoint haha conversely they've become an easy/fun/cheap way for DIY bands to make low cost high return merch items for kids at a super low price point. I can bust 4-5 out in an hour, sell 20 at a show for $5 a piece, & it's almost straight profit of $80-$100. Gotta sieze the opportunity on the fad while we can, they'll be lame in like, 30 more seconds

correct on the cap, depending on setup. Big shows set up for 7k

Correct, it was the outdoors stage only. It wasn't too packed at all.

I can see that for a Mustard Service show, but I wouldn't really consider that the type of rock to get rowdy to anyway.

And I'm going to go throw a generalization, and a stereotype out there, but a lot of what seems to be popular with Gen Z these days is uhhh.. a bit dull? Pheobe Bridgers / Mitski / BoyGenuis, I can't imagine wanting to drink and rock out to any of that.

Those acts are def not shows where its a rager, but I think the genre of music where that type of energy is now has flipped. Hip hop and bass (dub/edm) shows feel much closer to a mid-90s punk/hardcore show than anything you mentioned. It's not Gen Z has gotten soft, I just think the dynamics have changed,

The Cure, great live band that they are, have never really been big into production in terms of lighting, effects, etc. It's more about the general mood and vibe.

ah I didn’t realize there were multiple stages tbh - never been to the Mann. Scratch that! Iron Maiden and Metallica might be the closest heavy band that could do it. Even then, it’s the 20+ show thing. I think Phish or Coldplay are much more the Sphere’s speed.

The Skyline stage is pretty cool, feels just like a stage at the Warped Tour!
