Just listened to my Sleep Well Beast vinyl.

Album is excellent and actually might be my favorite studio release from the National. It’s not their most exciting, but it has a time and a place when you’re just relaxing and laying down on a nice evening. The album feels almost like reading chapters of a book where some parts of it are denser and slower moving and other parts are filled with action in every word. But there’s a simple, humbling central theme / narrative throughout that pulls at your emotions because it reminds you so much more of the routine ups and downs of real life than more dramatic exaggerated music.

Alligator / Boxer / High Violet are still really good, but once you hear them live you kinda wish they went as hard on those records. I don’t even listen to regular Boxer anymore cause Live in Brussels is so much more powerful and moving

I love this guy and I feel so validated rn

Trevor definitely missed easier / bigger plays he could've made on the plays discussed at 7:20 and 8:20. Both those times were signs that the offensive line was making him feel hurried all day. If he felt like he could afford a touch more patience, he would've seen the wide open stick route / Evan Engram being at least fairly open on a deep corner route (respectively). The INT was terrible too, but Trevor had nowhere to roll out and had to throw the ball or take a sack within like 2 seconds. Throwing it away wasn't an option.

Will Anderson in particular absolutely destroyed the right side of our line and the only reason Trev didn't take a lot of sacks is because he played with rhythm and didn't really risk extending plays. J.T. O'Sullivan does a great job explaining this in the video. But when you have a pre-planned read and you're throwing the ball within 2 seconds exactly when you hit your 3 or 5 step drop, that's a tradeoff that leads to missing deeper non-primary reads sometimes.

We gotta block better to unlock more big plays, cause ultimately you want your QB not to fuck up the game more than you want him to complete big throws. Priorities. Trevor had to focus on doing a lot of quick decision making and footwork in this game rather than coming out slinging because on most plays he didn't have time.

And for what it's worth, we still coulda put up 30+ points easily in this game without those two Calvin drops, the Agnew fumble, and the missed FG. That's at least 16 expected points we lost right there , since they all were in the red zone and one of the Calvin drops was a sure TD if he caught it. More than 16 if the second Calvin drop / Agnew fumble actually turned into touchdown drives rather than field goals.

So it's not even like Trev was too conservative. Even with the blocked FG, the INT, and our defense giving up 37, this offense still should've scored close to that if not more given our field position and where Trev was putting the ball. Trevor and Etienne... played WELL in the 17-37 loss. Prime example of the difference between taking advantage of opportunities and not.

Sleep Well Beast is great and is my second favorite album from The National. Guilty Party and I’ll Still Destroy You are two of their best songs.

Also, JT O’Sullivan’s QB/offense breakdowns are great and super digestible. Highly recommend them.

I always tell my wife if we ever buy a house and it has a deck, I will sit my ass on that deck every day and write a horror novel.

I liked Laugh Track upon my first listen, or at least I liked it more than IAETF and FTPOF, but that’s not exactly a ringing endorsement

i like two or three tracks near the end, and especially love the final track, but as a whole i’m begging the dessners to allow someone else to produce again

edit: i guess they actually did have outside producers on laugh track. idk what it is then lol.

I feel like they’ve lost a sense of urgency to their sound across their last few albums. It’s not even that I necessarily want more stuff like Mr. November or whatever. I just think they had an energy in their sound pre-IAETF that kept things interesting and invigorating. The lack of that has really caused their more recent stuff to just pass me by. I’ve never listened to IAETF or their two new albums and thought “Wow, this is bad.” It all just exists to me and rarely has anything actually grabbed my attention.
