Cassette’s are fun cause they’re so limited that I don’t have the ability to buy everything, coupled with the fact they’re like 12 bucks each. We as a society really fucked up though by moving away from CDs. They were right there in front of us and we took them for granted. Decently priced, highest quality audio, all the perks of liner notes and artwork, took up less space, weighed less. A true fumble.

  3. CDs are small and plastic and look dumb on a shelf IMO. Don't miss mine.

Did not think people were that rabid for ska music in 2023.

I'll gladly never buy a physical cd as long as I live.

The trick is to never buy a record if it wasn't in your top 10-15 AOTY list.

I hate to break it to the vinyl thread, there’s also no point of vinyl in 2023 haha

  9. reasonable minds can disagree about sound quality but for some of us there is definitely a point to the tangible medium at a minimum. and who the fuck is young enough to comfortably read anything in cd booklet sized text lol. ymmv as to whether that's worth the amount of money records cost these days tho

  12. It's funny that (without blinking an eye) we all buy vinyl for $30-50 of albums that we bought on CD 20 years ago for $12-15.

For folks like us who have very eclectic tastes and have accumulated a ton of artists we love over the years, I will admit that collecting vinyl seems like a bad idea. Very difficult to put a cap on spending or limit your focus. I more or less have a total amount of records that I'll allow in my living room. Let's see how that goes. haha.

  15. Some people just like collecting things that make them happy. The "point" is chasing a brief moment of joy when you get a new record in the mail you've wanted for years, or look at a record you love in your collection, put it on after a long day, or just see it on the shelf and smile. There are worse things I could spend my money on then something that makes me happy.

  16. I've been considering selling a few records that aren't "essential" to my collection, so I can focus more on collecting records that really are special to me, rather than just random stuff. Like, why do I own Nothing to Prove by H2O? I don't need that...

These companies know us Millennials have disposable income and are in the "nostalgic" phase of our lives. Marketing is on point.

Once I fill up 6 cubes I’ll start downsizing. Similar to Blu-ray’s, I'm done buying more shelving.

  19. I wasn't intending to make a post about privilege but okay, let's talk about it (but like, make that sentence not sound passive aggressive in your head as much as possible). I live with my parents and don't pay rent so I have a lot of disposable income for things. We're comfortably middle-class I guess you could say. I still buy a cd when a) I'm still getting to know an artist or b) I wanna support the artist but don't wanna spend too much on vinyl. Most of the time I'm buying vinyl or bluray because I found a good deal, of otherwise it's usually cds/dvds for me. More within my budget and also a lot of the time the movie doesn't really call for bluray. I'm not picky on audio or video quality. tbh I initially only got a record player because Longbeard and boygenius weren't on CD (at the time). Same with getting a bluray player for the director's cut of Doctor Sleep and Midsommar. I used to check out comic book runs at the library, now I have a shelf full of graphic novels. I have a pretty decent collection of stuff cluttering my bedroom. But I don't usually pay full price for anything

Yeah I am lucky that aside from select 90s-00s records, the vast majority of my collection is based in the 2010s and onward. I also do a lot of, "Am I going to be excited to hand this down to my kid in 15-20+ years?" If the answer is no, I might think twice on buying it.

Anyway, there's a place for the minimalist vinyl collectors (seems like an oxymoron) in this thread. I think I'm in the 135-150 range, and really can't think of more than 10-15 records I would buy right now.

You can be passive aggressive about privilege to me, at least. Even despite some recent changes and not being truly rich, I am privileged as fuck. I bought like 150 vinyl in the past 12 months. I did get a lot of those through deals on MerchBar and that $5 Rise warehouse cleaning sale and such. But a lot were just being in a financial place to drop $40-$50 for an album I want.

I respect it. My problem is I usually wind up trying to be a completionist when it comes to a bands discography haha.

I mostly buy vinyl that is either new releases or releases from back in the day that I don’t have on CD or downloaded and feel bad about it haha

These days I really only buy vinyl of artists that I already own on vinyl. Can’t afford to get any other artists or I’ll have to get their whole studio album discography eventually lol

I def have been there, and I still have a few where I'm like, I love this band, but I really don't need this particular album on vinyl (I've been seeing how much Circa's OG copies of Violent Waves have been going for...). I've also been debating selling my Anberlin boxset, because as much as I love the band, there's only 3ish of their albums I truly love front to back.
