I will say this though, if the Athletic didn’t require 3 years of writing experience and was heavily prioritizing football knowledge instead, yeah I’d apply with a straight face haha. I do legit understand this sport p well for someone who didn’t play in college or high school. I COULD write good ass articles about it if I got paid to do so and could quit my job and legit spend 40 hours a week watching game film. I’d obviously be a lot better at long form strategy breakdowns than reporting.

I mean, genuinely, apply. The worst thing they can do is not call you back.

I've applied to way too many jobs where I literally had their exact requirements (one was literally a 6 month contract doing educational streaming for the Smithsonian museum history programs, when 2-3 years before I had filmed at every one of their museums and helped create the template to even do these programs...and I never even got a call back).

I got my original job at GMU because I was just randomly searching videographer jobs and saw the listing and applied while the market was crashing in fall 2008...and Ive got a decade of work and like, 60% of my independent contracting jobs out of it...so, upside of applying is they may have something that's interesting/relevant for you

 

Jags first four drives:

1) began our drive past the 50, got to the 33 but a drop on a 30 yard dime to an open Calvin Ridley stalled the drive and we missed a field goal

2) got to the 30, Ridley drops what would’ve converted a first down, blocked field goal by Will Anderson

3) got to the 30, a penalty on Brandon Scherff negates what would’ve finally been a third down conversion to Ridley. Punt.

4) got to the 30, Jamal Agnew fumbles the ball away

four drives in a ROW: we got well within field goal range / near the red zone, Lawrence puts the ball in a receiver’s hands past the first down marker, we fuck it up and get 4th down instead, we come away with 0 points

and that’s just on the receivers. This game was a mess in all phases. On special teams we gave up both that blocked field goal, AND a kick return to a fuckin fullback because all 11 guys freaked out & ran to the same spot when the main returner fumbled the ball. In the secondary we were giving up 40-50 yard bombs to Dell by leaving him way too open more than once and not respecting him. in the D-Line we were not pressuring Stroud even though four starting O-linemen were hurt. In the offensive playcalling we were not running the ball even though it was working, but also getting scared and not throwing downfield at all after those first few mishaps - and forcing the ball to slot routes by Agnew for some reason instead of Kirk / throwing dumb predictable checkdowns to Engram instead of using him for mismatches (what the fuck Press Taylor.).

We had a chance when Doug finally took the headset from Press and started running the ball again, of course Doug scores 10 points immediately with better play calling making it a winnable game at 17-10 third quarter. But that’s when the kick return happened (24-10) and then Lawrence gets so frustrated he throws a really dumb interception and ruins any chance of a late comeback (31-10). So it just snowballed instantly out of control right at the point we could’ve came back.

Every single thing we could’ve done wrong, we did. It’s like we’ve been playing on All-Pro and switched to All-Madden for this game lol. I was not prepared for the whole team to lose focus and play way beneath their talent level all at once.
